The Times running an article today entitled “Is there going to be a lockdown?”….let’s say the probability of a lockdown is 10-20% this year - any sensible government would take measures now to bring that down…we have to avoid lockdowns at all costs… heading into winter with no restrictions at all and taking passports off the table is a idiotic and reckless gamble that only extreme libertarian fuckwits like Hugo think is smart. I have no idea where deaths and hospitalisations are going to be in 2-3 months time, and neither (it appears) do the experts…therefore erring on the side of prudence is simply the obvious route to take and keep us out of lockdown. The Tory prioritisation of civil liberties is, unfortunately, totally incompatible with Johnson’s likely reaction if hospitalisations hit 30k.

Funky They’re not antithetic arguments though, are they? Vaccination is clearly doing an important job at the moment. It remains to be seen how long that efficacy will remain in place, and what impact there will be from a possible Winter wave.

The imposition of ‘restrictions’ isn’t binary either, is it? You’ve got stay at home protocols, business shutdowns, social gathering restrictions, mask wearing, travel corridors, and yeah - proof of vaccination. ‘Right wing governments’ (as you call them) have the choice to impose one, several, all, or none of these.

Sadly, the level of discourse about COVID policy has got stuck at much the same level of political discourse of the past decade - if you’re not with me, then you’re against me, and if you’re not at the absolute polarity of the political spectrum, then fuck you for not being strong / smart / brave / patriotic / cynical enough…

Funky vaccines only prevent 50% of infections on average… given there are no restrictions and we are heading into winter it’s possible hospitalisation go up from 8k now to 20-40k in 2-3 months time… and that Johnson panics and locks us down again… why take that risk? Act now, introduce passports and act preemptively, and avoid lockdown… why is that difficult to understand?

It is possible delta burns itself out but no one knows… so why take unnecessary risks and cow tow to right wing libertarian nutters? (Like Hugo)
