Just sharing my experience, Dave. Want to let the friends out there know that an 8% Cali IPA isn’t the same as a 3% Carlsberg can from the chippy. And it’s not alcohol that makes Australians and Americans act like cunts - it’s just part of the culture.

The Belgians also don’t treat beer like boozers. They’re an immensely stupid bunch for many reasons, but I’ll give them their beer and chocolate.

Do you get many of the chippy frequenting, Carlsberg swilling crowd in California? I would have guessed/assumed that most of the folks that make it out to the West coast from the UK are already drinking the 8% Cali IPA at vast expense that’s been imported into the UK…

jonattonyeah when I was last in the US about 5 years ago I found that the craft IPAs never had the % ABV on the taps or menus, so you didn’t know what strength you were buying. Maybe if they are all high % it makes no difference, but over here you can get a 4% or 8% craft IPA, so it’s good to know what you are getting into before selecting your drink in the boozer.

RichM Yeah, definitely the case a few years back. Came a cropper on a decent IPA called Dogfish Head 90. 9% ABV, which will leave a dent after a 12 hour flight from London to LAX. Nothing on the menu / tap to suggest it was a feisty fucker.

More recently, when I’ve been working in DC, most of the beer gardens/bars I’ve gone to have the ABV figures on the menu. Don’t know if that’s a national trend though…

They do now. Pretty rare to not see the ABV listed. Necessary as some of these west coast IPAs get crazy high - 10-12% in some cases. And we’re pouring pints of the stuff.

jonattonyeah When I was in San Fran on a J1 I went to a party at 2 in the afternoon and the party boys and girls broke out the beer bongs. It was devastated beyond repair by 3:30 with people passed out behind couches and some who clearly needed medical assistance. We like to ease it in rather than see who can get to the finish line fastest.

jonattonyeah This is a fairly recent phenomenon - when it was all Bud and all that shite, it was piss weak - I remember going to New York and the Budweiser was under 3% - couldn’t get pissed. The flip side was having someone over from the US and feeding him 5 pints of Stella and then watching him puking out of a cab window at 8pm.
