ScottBailey i can’t give you much for sources right now as i researched this stuff extensively about 4 years ago, so i’m about as confident as i can be without being absolutely sure. my wife seems to think the whold acidic blood thing isn’t based in anything concrete, but i’m not too sure about that part. i do know that i eat way more vegetables being keto than i ever did before. people tend to equate keto with atkins and carnivore diets, but those tend to be subsets of keto rather than equivalents.
booze update
Hursty sod trying to do endurance races on keto diet. I know there are people out there who are masters of it, but the lag I felt (fat metabolism is slower than carbs) when trying to do exercise was not worth it for me. Personally I used it for pre-marathon prep’, to get my body weight down as low as I could, but still feeling healthy. Once I started the training I brought the carbs back in. Worked a charm and achieved my goal (marathon time).
Hursty Must say the first few days are tough, the body is screaming for carbs but I know it won’t last.
the first two weeks, i though i was going to die, then my brain just woke up one day. the physical stuff took me 3 months to get back to normal output, it does take time for your body to get efficient at processing fat for energy, but you’ll absolutely know it when it happens.
As for alcohol I made a bottle of dry red wine last over the weekend which I thought was ok in terms of keeping things low carb?
i don’t drink wine, but that’s what my wife did. seemed to work ok for her. my best advice is to stay under 30 grams net/day and be strict about stuff like alcohol or any cheats until you’re fat adapted. it sucks at the beginning, but it’ll get you there faster.
ScottBailey i absolutely need carbs for peak performance, i eat 40 grams of dried plantains before soccer and i can run for days. distance running is different for me, i can do that keto and fasted, but i max out at 10ish km, so it’s not quite the same as what you’re doing and everyone reacts a little differently.
Not exactly sold on this keto lark …. sounds a right ball ache
Chuck in a pandemic, two kids under 6, home schooling, and full time WFH and not quite sure now would be the right time to even think about starting something like that
Good luck!!
Kells77 that’s a good point, it can flare up after you’re fat adapted too if you don’t stay on top of your electrolytes. if i get lazy, it happens. you dump way more sodium on keto than on carb heavy diets, so you need to take in a lot more sodium to compensate. i take magnesium and potassium every day too, in addition to eating foods like avocados daily.
now keto rash is a different story if you’re like me and you’re one of the unlucky few to get it. that’s shit i don’t wish on anyone.

303abuser Good old Dioralyte. Not just for the s##ts!
Hursty want to experience the feeling of being in ketosis
You won’t know for definite unless you’re peeing on a stick. There’ll be clues like the brain fog and feeling very low on energy (whilst you adapt), but you can get that even on very low carb.
ScottBailey Ordered some strips off Amazon earlier, I start tomorrow!
303abuser i have no idea how anyone with kids eats keto, too much work to cook separate meals and growing kids need more dietary carbohydrates.
Assume it would be pretty easy to be honest. Just cook your keto meal and then give them about 5 rounds of bread each.
“Oh you want pizza? Make your salmon, avocado and cucumber salad into a sarnie dickhead. Here’s a cheese slice.”
If I remember correctly, you’re not supposed to test on the first pee of the day. Second onwards. Something about the way you dehydrate throughout the night giving a false reading. I might be wrong. Read instructions as it’s been ages since I did it.
Might also be worth invensting in a blood sugar tester too. I did. Helps you understand how your insulin spikes after meals, or not.
Hursty Think you’ll be surprised quite how low you have to go to start producing ketones. Remember feeling pretty rough and sure they must have been present, only to show I wasn’t.
ScottBailey reminds me of my first adventure with mct oil. they can’t put a strong enough warning around that stuff.
303’s posts are driving me to alcoholism.
