The thing that gets me about these early 20s alt-right champions like Owens, (the late) Milo, Kirk etc in the states, Tom Harwood, Kate Andrews, Darren Grimes etc in the UK, is the smug straight faced nature when wheeling out the misinformation to camera is unbearable to watch.

You kind of got used to it with politicians when they were accountable because you knew that if they were caught they were (kinda) dumped out and shamed in public.

Now we are seeing Hypernormilsation in action with paid shills in government and the media (berating the media funnily enough) doing the bidding of their paymasters who are often paying both sides to play causing this disharmony.

Mad_Cyril It’s like everything, Cyril, it’s how you use it. My twitter is completely negative free. Sport, comedy, history, architecture. And its a brilliant resource for all of the above. I deleted everything politics related in 2016 and its like a different platform. I get sent terrible stuff from it daily by mates but that’s par for the course when in a WhatsApp group filled with grumpy middle aged casualties.

MC, its more that these Twitter Trolls are increasingly being wheeled out on the BBC to provide ‘balance’ or given prominence on Question Time packed with bad faith actors in the crowd. The people who watch daytime news and trust the BBC are increasingly being groomed as they are very convincing of you take them at face value. They are smart, well educated (for the most part) and can keep a straight face.

These guys (Owens/Milo) are given platforms in the US and ‘used’ to create further division. “Oh look I’m Black but I love Trump. You lot are idiots”, “Hi, I’m gay, but love Right Wing ideals. You lot are soooo wrong”

Whether they truly hold those views or not, they are being handsomely rewarded (ok, not milo now) for their work. If they weren’t such divisive actors they would be anonymous.

I was thinking maybe SM platforms need to take a stand themselves with better Bot detection, limitations on accounts held, more restrictive sign-up procedures etc.

Maybe even switching off (not everyone has a vpn) in countries in the two weeks heading up to elections to ease up on the bombardment that goes on during those times.

I don’t use twitter myself but i do use FB. I’ve had to unfollow a lot of good friends due to the stuff they keep posting without actually checking whether is true or false. They just re-post stuff thinking there clever.

I wonder if zackster or some others on here would deem any ‘conservative with a small c’ media outlets as actually being acceptable or respectable, and if so then which? Or is them being in any way conservative already somehow an immediate marker of them being “horrific”?

And FYI, I am no more a fan of Trump or Boris than I am of any Democrat or Labour figurehead.

Conservative news is largely political and therefore garbage. Same with liberal news. It serves only one purpose and that’s to cater to those who eat it up. If you can’t be in the middle these days and assess everything from neutral ground then you’re doomed.

Well done, you’ve finally posted something again which I think is worth commenting on (though my reply is addressed to everyone, not just you).

Are there any news sources which aren’t particularly political though?

Are there any news sources nowadays which are relatively neutral? Even the Financial Times has been increasingly failing to deliver objective and rigorous journalism in recent years.

Plus, in order to “be in the middle” and “assess everything from neutral ground”, one at least has to be able to consider the varying viewpoints across the political spectrum - that would be impossible if there are no outlets which lean more towards one side of the political spectrum which one would accept as being in any way respectable or worth considering.

Seeing as I was a dyed in the wool Conservative up until 2017 who religiously read the Daily Mail its easier to decimate when a story is being overly spun or ignored. Its not so much the platform rather than the lack of thought given by the viewer.

The problem is that people are for the most part lazy and want to be led. They dont want to think for themselves so will blindly follow without question. This is a long process though and its built over many years to get to that place.
