Amps I’m with you. Laser noises are both awesome and essential. Experiment with pitch envelopes, as a large element of the sound can be fast pitch dropping or rising. Same with filter sweeps. Or get sampling them from where ever and do the same thing. In short experiment.

apyssjw Yeah, I need the fisher price my first laser noise tutorial.

…ancient version of Live, but principles are the same:

i need to stop looking at black friday sales. does anyone have experience with arturia’s pigments software? looks really interesting, especially with the modulation options, and it’s on sale for $90 CAD.

@303abuser I have not forgotten about your feedback. It’s all valid. I haven’t had use of my mousing hand lately… I got one of those old fucker diseases that’s ruined using a desktop the past few weeks. Shingles. Fucking shingles! Almost healed, but the random weird pain is obnoxious. Do not recommend.

303abuser Aye! Bought it when it was half price earlier this year. It’s a beast in terms of options to modulate. And very simple to do so too: lots of graphics (colours) to show you which you are modulating so you don’t lose track on what is going where.
One of the really cool features it has is the function option (3 of these) which you can basically draw in your modulating pattern and then assign something to that.

The thing that swung it for me was the sound engine. Really really clear and so much fuller than something like Serum or bundled Ableton synths. Add to that the really cool grantulator mode and for the price they are offering, it’s a no brainer really.

Henry i was hoping you were going to say it’s shit and to stay far away. 🤣

you basically confirmed what i saw in a couple of videos. it really does look good at that price, not that i need it, but who buys things they need? what’s it like for cpu usage? i know with diva, i can run a few instances, but if i have the quality set to ‘divine’ with tons of modulation, i have to bounce to audio to keep things moving.

JonQPublik that sucks, hope you get rid of it sooner vs later. i feel like i’m falling apart this week too, so i can sympathize a little.

303abuser CPU doesn’t get hammered too much. I’m on an iMac 2015 with just an i5 chip and it never gets above 30% with a few synths pumping away. As usual, as you increase the voices it tends to go up a bit.

If you are looking for something that is easy to modulate, then this is what you want. Why not just get the demo first and take the plunge if you like it?

The other Arturia synths look really good too. They’re trying to tempt me with offers for the Collection 7. I really like what they do emulating classic sounds. But not sure I need another massive list of synths to start learning. Still trying to learn Pigments!

Henry that should work then, i’m still using my 2012 mac mini, but that thing is a workhorse given it’s age.

honestly, i’ll probably just buy it for the sampler and granular functions alone. i have enough synths, but more noisemakers are always good. once you’ve learned one, they’re all just variations and it comes down to finding the sweet spots.

A Mac Mini 2012! Fecking hell. Gives me hope that my iMac running everything from an external SSD boot up disk will still last me for years then!

You’re right about the synths all doing pretty much the same thing. Although as I mentioned the Arturia sound engines are so good it will stand apart from many competitors.

Henry yeah i’m amazed it’s doing as well as it is. i did upgrade to 16 gb of ram and it’s got the fusion drive, but i’m waiting for it to die at some point.

off to buy pigments and spend the afternoon messing with software instead of finishing tracks lol.

I see Apple has released new laptops using their own silicon.

Interested to see how logic runs on this new gear, particularly when running non-native binaries under emulation.

Early benchmarks suggesting they blow intel CPUs out of the water.

i saw that. the initial reviews look good, but i won’t be going anywhere near it for a couple of years until it’s been publicly tested. going to try to stretch my mini as out as long as i can. if you’re running logic and only apple software though, i would assume it’s a pretty good upgrade.

mono-stereo yeah that’s the first thing i did. nothing fancy, but just playing around with envelopes/filters/lfos and i already like it. it’s going to take months to really figure it all out though. even if you just look at it as money spent on entertainment, it’s good value.

Trying to be super disciplined this year. Scaler 2 is the only new plugin I actually want (other than reason / live upgrades). Anyone have any experience of using it?

haven’t used scaler myself, sorry. almost looked it up then decided not to in case i like it haha.

woke up at 430 this morning thinking about granular synthesis, i may have a problem. 🤣

                  It’s a music theory plugin.

I just need to keep repeating my mantra - ’I don’t need anymore synths, I don’t need anymore synths’ (buys discounted synth) 🙂

ah, i’ve got a kordbot for that, although i don’t use it as often as i should.

i will say, if you want to buy a synth you don’t need, look at pigments. this thing is fantastic.

mono-stereo Junkie XL is selling all his gear

Talk about clickbait - at the end he says he’s selling a lot of it but still keeping his favourite pieces.

I didn’t know he’d done so much film score work though, so at least I learned something from clicking on the video under false pretences.

hugopal I didn’t know he’d done so much film score work though, so at least I learned something from clicking on the video under false pretences.

                    Praise be

i’ve got another $25 voucher for plugin alliance that expires today and i’m not using it. if you want it, reply here or dm me and it’s yours.

mono-stereo All that gear, all those sound tracks, all dosh… best thing he ever did was B Y Whop To The Y / Siyncho

303abuser Excellent, any suggestions on what I should buy chaps? I have no plug ins of any sort at the moment. Just using the in built stuff with Ableton.

Amps is there anything you ‘need’ specifically? like a compressor, eq, synth, etc? i have several of their plugins, but mostly more expensive stuff that went on massive discount.

edit: looking at their page now, maybe check out some of the unfiltered audio stuff, their fx related software can be a lot of fun for sound design. like sandman pro, dent 2, fault are all good prices. you can also demo anything to try it first too.

                          • Amps replied to this.

303abuser As I have nothing, I would assume I need everything! But I guess a good reverb or compressor should be top of my list? Or is there a synth I can’t do without?

Amps i have lion and oberhausen which are both amazing, but not at this price. i bought both for less than $40 each. for compressors, i’m waiting for zip to go on sale, if i can get it for $40 or less, i’ll buy it.

i’m assuming a black friday sale is coming tomorrow or the next day, so i’d use this on something already cheap (you’ll get a handful of free utility plugins with it), then look for bigger stuff later this week based on the new sale.

Is the Unfiltered Audio stuff any good?

i love their stuff. i have lion, triad, byome, dent2, and spec ops. i will add that i paid about $120 total for all of it though, don’t go anywhere near list prices for them.

                              Sweet, just bough Fault.

All the compressors and reverbs where a bit pricey for my current tastes, so went with a cheap toy for want of a better description.

Amps that’ll be cool for sound design, the modulation system is really good. the expensive plugins, with the exception of 3 or 4 new ones, will all go on sale for $50 or less at some point and you can combine those with loyalty vouchers, that’s the way to go.

Winner. I don’t really want to buy loads of stuff at the moment, I’m still working out the basics, but I’m sure that will all change soon enough.

yeah that’s a good strategy, i didn’t buy a single plugin until about 2 years in. it’s helpful to know what you need vs just buying stuff because it’s cheap.
