Amps Re Ableton.

The whole moving from Session to Arrangement view is clumsy and unnecessarily complicated as fuck.

Thank you for your time.

Use the tab key - or a dual monitor setup and make sure that the ‘Second Window’ option is checked under the Options menu.

You owe me a pint.

Amps Still an issue if you’re just using a DAWs in built synth?

Not really. If you’re using VSTs/AU/VST3 MIDI jitter/lag isn’t really an issue due to reasons that are far too complicated to explain here. It’s really more an issue with external hardware synths due to reasons that are far too complicated to bother explaining here.

That said, one of the reasons older records from the early 2000s and before aren’t always bang on time is because the drums were done via MIDI, so you get jitter/lag. The same applies for the actual synth sounds, so it can add a certain ‘groove’ to the sound that some people like. I on the other hand like my stuff to be quite stiff sounding in terms of timing so that’s it’s so mechanical it’s funky.

It’s not the actual ‘flipping’ from one screen to another that is the issue, it’s the behaviour of Tracks and Clips and other bits when you do, none of it is intuitive. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it, but at present it’s a genuine issue.

I don’t use Session view whatsoever. I know lots of people who do, but you’re right that it’s integration in between the two is clunky.

I would suggest just using Arrangement view mate. Set up your loop points over 8, 16, 32 or 64 bars and build that way. It’s a more linear way of working. Outside of Logic and Bitwig, every other DAW is designed like this. The power of Ableton is the way you can easily route stuff and create things so quickly. I would argue its audio engine isn’t as good as things like Cubase, Logic, Studio One, etc.

Just because Session is there doesn’t mean you have to use it. It’s more or less designed for live use anyway. I use Session to DJ with.

      • Amps replied to this.

Don’t you find music lacks groove if everything is right on the grid? I grid my kicks and almost everything else is slightly off. Always nudge my snares forward, hats back, swing delays, lfos are free running.

303abuser Always nudge my snares forward, hats back,

That’s really quick and easy in XLN Audio XO by the way. Not to incite any more GAS! 😆

The only thing I swing are my high hats. I get plenty of groove going. I started out as a drummer, so timing is very important to me. 😉

So the short answer is no. Delays, reverbs and filter sweeps can add the extra funk.

Morty-C-137 I actually looked closely at XO on the sale this week, but it’s not m1 ready, so I left it on the shelf.

loopdokter Fair enough, maybe I’ll try some stuff in robot mode and see how it comes out.

I was fully prepared to buy it too, looks like a good tool.

303abuser It’s so quick to whip up good sounding drumkits and grooves and no more tireless browsing through your drum sample libraries.

I got it for €74 at the beginning of the month thinking it prob won’t get any lower for BF but it did, but still It was 100% worth it.

At half off, I was sold, but I don’t need another plugin that I can’t use if they don’t upgrade. It’s been 2 years, get on it already.

Do any of you use the Vital synth? Very capable. Sometimes I like to match the sound with other synths and create oscillator templates like that.

Currently also working on a preset bank for Vital.

apyssjw Nice, I really like that pinky arp lead thing and the mix is super clean too. Like culture shock going from the hazy stuff that I normally make and listen to lol.

apyssjw My new album is seven tracks long - call that a wrap

I always like to have a few more than I need so I can make sure they flow well in sequence and I can cut some out as needed and just use them for other releases. This album is shaping up to be a little more eclectic I think, definitely heavier than the Rivers album from July, so I’m not too sure how many we’ll need.

Morty-C-137 Yeah I’m in the finishing groove this week. Need to clean up all the tracks we’ve started and see how it all shakes out. I hate having too many unfinished tracks, there’s usually something worth exploring in them.

loopdokter I always wonder how useful a controller like that actually is. The reverbs are supposed to be quite nice.

                      Morty-C-137

It’s proving quite handy. Super responsive. No mouse clicking is a good thing.

But, instead of clocking buttons on the mouse you’re clicking buttons on the controller. No dails, no faders. To each their own I suppose.

Unbroken1 thanks. Appreciate it. What have you got going on production wise (do you have time to get some in around the mammoth mixes)?

loopdokter I don’t use Session view whatsoever

Think this might be the way to go.

Current thoughts: Ive written some music I think I like, but I have no idea if it is in fact complete shite.

You need a palate cleanser every now and then 🙂

Of course, it’s the music that will decide. Kraftwerk’s 6 track 30mins or so albums are still perfectly formed imho.

apyssjw …always have multiple things going on, it’s the finishing off part that I struggle with 😅

I’m always learning when it comes to production, I don’t consider myself an expert in any department, lots of ideas though! Have added a few bits of hardware in recent years, tried to be really selective about what I buy but have barely scratched the surface with them to be honest, I’m always fascinated to watch videos on how different people integrate it into their workflow, I haven’t managed it yet.

I’m also really lacking in confidence when it comes to mixing/mastering, but have had really varied results when I’ve involved other people. Have been a bit spoiled that my previous studio partner had really good all-round skills in those departments and a knack of being able to get down what was in my head.

                            Loved this.

303abuser Just sketches / ideas at the moment, nothing worth listening too, but it’s odd listening back to it and trying to be critical of it, and trying to work out which ideas are worth working on etc.

Amps Share some of those, it’s a good way to get feedback and insight. It’s tough to properly hear your own work at times.

It’s all one big learning experience Amps. For all creatives all the time. It never ends.
