…little intro/ambient thing I’ve been messing around with for a radio mix I’m doing, reminds me a little of Leftfield’s ‘Melt’, although not necessarily what I was going for! Have been enjoying experimenting with sound design using resampling and Simpler.

Unbroken1 when I first picked up a push using simpler / sample chopping was the first use I found for it - with the different modes / jamming with the slices.

Unbroken1 Interesting sounds in here! Resampling is great fun. Record a synth live whilst messing with some parameters.. add FX.. chuck the audio in a sampler and manipulate further. Great fun with found sound also.

Unbroken1 I like that. Did you run the chord stab (starts at the beginning and runs all the way through) through a vocoder? Or is the metallic feel from another filter or something else?

303abuser …yeah, synth washes through the vocoder running a perc loop. Seems a nice way of having a rhythmic element that sits melodically with the rest of the track, haven’t used it before.

Unbroken1 That’s a technique I use all the time, works great on hats too. This track would fit well with the album we’re working on now, similar sound and vibe.

apyssjw …on loan for a little while, didn’t scratch the surface of it really. Lovely bit of kit, need to be making more music in the studio as opposed to in headphones on my lap to justify one really.

Unbroken1 yes - now that it can be used as a plugin, rather than a stand alone host. I only really use the synths at the moment which sound great. It’s one of my aspirations to get a bit deeper into it. The newest version allows you to resize the window so that it’s actually viewable. Sounds nuts but you have to work (and I’m still working with as Im not upgrading yet) with really small windows which you could hardly read on the previous versions.

…do you pay the full monthly subs for it then?

There’s a Player Device that I’d really like to try, but they don’t work like a normal VST and have to run through Reason, committing to another subscription for something with a load of bells and whistles that I may never use (there’s plenty within Live that I already don’t use!) seems a bit daft to me. I’ve read you can buy the lite version for about £15 on eBay and run them that way, but would appreciate some insight if you have any?

Unbroken1 no I don’t and won’t subscribe. You can buy reason outright, which at the moment is £349. I bought it years ago for under £100 in a sale and upgraded for a similar amount in another sale to reason 11 which allowed it to be used as a plugin. You should be able to use the player devise in the nested plugin within live for instance. I’ve used the dual ARP that way. Paying full whack probably a bit overkill for a single device tho.

….so just to clarify, I can buy the Device on its own and it’ll work? is there a standard Reason ‘wrapper’ of some sort that comes with the Player Devices?

Unbroken1 no. You need to have reason, either owning it or renting.

Reason can be used as a vst within live - and you can load whatever you like into the reason ‘rack’ - be that a synth, drum machine or player (/midi device).

So the player you are thinking of buying will need to nest within the reason rack vst in live, if that is how you were hoping to use it.

Edit - looking at the website you can try the subscription for a dollar for 30 days, probably your best bet. I can’t easily see some sort of kontact player equivalent.
