Just signed up to Sonic Academy which has some great tutorials on Ableton, and for me on how to use those fecking Arturia instruments I bought a few months back. The Arturia stuff is delivered with a fair bit of wit from King Unique, which helps when slogging through the videos.

Henry let me know how that goes. i’m amazed at how little i know about ableton after using it for 5 years. i like watching youtube tutorials, but often it’s 20 minutes to pick up one little thing i didn’t know before, so it’s not the most efficient way to learn. features like instrument and drum racks are so deep and there’s no way you’re coming up with all of it on your own. maybe i should read the manual lol.

Henry …funnily enough I bought the Ableton Mixing & Mastering course for £10.99 in the NYD sale from Udemy.

Teacher is great… unfortunately the track he’s mixing is a banging auld trance number, not sure how my head will be after 6 hours of it. The extra £30 for Fred Everything’s mixing deep house ioMusic Academy thing is sounding like a decent investment at the moment.

303abuser Only following the KU Arturia tutorials for now. He does one on FM sythesis/Operator which is pretty entertaining; but unfortunately nothing specifically Ableton-related. There’s a few others tutors on there teaching Ableton workflows etc which I will dip in and out of.

Know exactly what you means about searching for that one tiny bit of information on Youtube to get a parameter working or something, and getting someone’s entire life story in the process. And shout outs too to all their family and sponsors for making all this happen.

I did think about creating a YouTube channel called 1 minute tips or something, on Ableton and Maschine/NI tips. But would probably end up rambling away and running over the 1 minute.

I would say, however, that the Sonic Academy tutorials are fairly concise. There’s a 14 day free trial and easy cancellation; which I will probably do when I have nailed all of the Arturia tutorials.

Unbroken1 6 hours of listening to any mix is too much, full on trance just amps that up about a thousand times lol. when i’m mixing a track, i do it in 20-30 minutes stretches to give my ears a break and reset my perception of the track. then check it again the next day for the same reason, then have a second set of ears check it while mastering.

If we start getting snippets of trance on any of your mixes, we’ll know what’s happened. 😀

Henry interesting, i’m going to check that out. i’m digging into pigments, but i have a few tracks i need to finish this month, so it’ll probably be february before i really have time.

i like the 1 minute tip idea if you’re looking for specific help, i say go for it. on the other end of that spectrum, i like the ronny pries videos on youtube. a lot of it is dub oriented, but he takes 2-3 hours and you get to see his actual workflow as he answers questions from a chat. i’ve learned a ton from him.

Also, you get some of the background to the synth or theory beforehand which is pretty good. Well for me anyway, as I only knew a few bits and bobs here and there.

Here’s one on additive synthesis which is interesting not least by the method of delivery!

Henry just watched the entire video, this stuff really appeals to my music nerd sensibilities. i’m definitely going to check out the course.

every once in a while i get into a flow state where i’m not thinking about the tools, just making sounds, solving problems and it all happens almost effortlessly. my goal is to get comfortable enough that i don’t have to think and just create. and actually create, not just replicate and reiterate. whatever i can do to accelerate that initial learning curve seems like a good plan.

Been taking some time out from production to get my head straight on direction. Hence why I didn’t get that track to you - so apols about that. Hope the album collab you are working on is coming along well.

These vids are a tonic at the moment for me as I need a better understanding on how to wring the sounds I need out of existing synths. Rather than keep buying shit because I am too lazy to learn anything.

no worries, i basically took a break from july through october. i need that every once in a while and i find i’m better when i get back at it. no rush at all. we actually stalled out a bit the last couple of weeks, but we have 5 or 6 tracks that are 75% done. hoping to finish one for a compilation this month.

i totally get that. for me, there’s a balance between the inspiration i get from new tools and having a variety of tools and being completely useless while i’m learning them. sometimes i restrict myself to one or two synths for a track or configure my hardware in a specific way for a track. limitations can be a good thing too. whatever keeps it interesting and fun.
