…so after flogging my TR8 about a year ago, finally went back in for the TR8s. Similar to programme, but massive step-up in possibilities. Loving messing about with imported synth samples and the motion recording is a game changer

Unbroken1 i’ve been looking at the tr8s since it came out, looks like a great foundation drum machine and playing samples opens it right up. are you using it for the studio or incorporating it into live sets?

303abuser …mainly for in the studio, but I did end up running the TR8 through the DJ mixer last time so you never know. Even with the addition of some super-basic melodic elements, like a single pad or a stab, it feels much more like something I could imagine playing live with now, actually think the sound is better than the TR8 too.

Lovely remixes mate, enjoying the first one a lot… sounds like something from one of those Deep & Dark comps on Seven Villas. You listened to any of Pablo Bolivar’s streams/sets?

303abuser Thmbsup. Only reflection on the mix is that the ‘snare’ click cuts through the mixes. Could possibly have dialled the initial transients down a little using a transient designer.

Unbroken1 yeah it looks much better suited for live than the original tr8, really easy to either build a live set around or use it as a dj tool in more minimal sets.

and thanks, i left the noise/tape hiss way up on this one, i really like the texture and atmosphere it adds. funny you mention it, i was listening to the nae:tek deep & dark, dub techno mixes last week. i haven’t listened to his sets, but i’m a huge fan of pablo bolivar’s productions, need to give his live stuff a listen.

Unbroken1 i went back and forth on two versions of the master, went with the noisiest one as it sounded like rainfall to me too. between that and some of the sound fx from nature i’ve been using, i’m thinking about starting a sub-sub genre, rain forest dub techno. 🤣

…plug-in(s) for tape FX?

Unbroken1 i use softube tape for subtle bus/master tape, baby audio vhs for noise/wobble/chorus, audiothings wires for more extreme tape fx and sound design, modnetic (mostly for delays, but has tape-like noise and echo qualities), arturia’s space echo, and ableton’s echo.

i wrote that list off the top of my head, so i may have missed a couple, but that’s the bulk of it. it probably seems like overkill, but each of those have a niche use for me and have a different sound/character.

apyssjw thanks. the snare is intentional, it was my favorite part of the original and i wanted to keep the feel/vibe and tempo of the original while dubbing it out. while it’s obviously been affected/processed, i actually didn’t use any sounds that didn’t originate from the stems.

303abuser glad to be of assistance. I use it a lot on pads and leads to give them that wonky, modulated warble of bad tape. It’s a great plugin for making music for kids on drugs. 😆

Listened to a few of these podcasts recently. The Nick Muir interview is a good one, mostly because he comes across well and the host lets him speak for the most part.

I like his take on house music taking on a different feeling when heard through a loud sound system / in its proper context.

The Barry Jamieson / Dave Gardner interview is a difficult listen as they talk over each other and the interviewer is more involved.

I got a great deal on MacBook 16″ from Amazon warehouse (nearly new or something). So took the plunge as my iMac is on it’s last legs and had a fan strapped to the back of the casing.
Anyway, was supposed to be delivered yesterday but the driver swiped it! Lol.
I called Amazon customer services, who in turn called him. Said it had somehow disappeared from his van.

Just ordered another, this time an i9 with 1TB SSD for nearly half the price of a new one. Mind you, if it’s the same driver again then it might well be another no show. Or some bricks and tins of baked beans in the box.

I know, I know. Wait for the M1X chips. But I’m sick of Ableton/NI/Arturia not having translated their codes to Apple Silicon yet. Plus the 1st gen new MacBooks will inevitably have issues.

Henry what a piss off, hopefully the new one makes it to you. as soon as they release the m1x mac mini, i’m ordering it immediately. i’m sure the software will be catching up in the next 6-12 months.

303abuser Yeah, think the new Mac Mini will be a very good buy. The thing is that I have heaps of plugins which I know won’t port over to Apple Silicon. And since you can’t run Rosetta in tandem with the new chips native, they will be pretty much redundant. So I probably will be one of the final Intel hangers on to get one of the new M Macs.
According to one of the developers at NI, because there’s so many packs, plug ins, synths etc, they have a colossal task porting everything over and are way off from doing so.
Fortunately, Ableton is a bit more straight forward.

Was also looking at Logic the other day. Was tempted for about 2 minutes, but the interface reminded me too much of the days of Cubase hell which is a place I never want to return to.
