Reading Devil’s Guard by George Robert Elford. Pretty controversial as elements of US special forces believed it to be real and acted accordingly when out in Iraq/Afghanistan. Good read so far.

Amps I did read Red Side Story sometime last year, sorry. It was enjoyable, but thankfully I won’t be clamoring for a 3rd. It wasn’t a disappointment- more of a sigh, I guess.

I read maybe 4 books last year. Very disappointing, I guess. I’m just not reading with the same fervor as before Covid.

I have been hella busy with the art thing, though. I should bump my art by me thread. It’s been a while.

Loaded up Leo Carew’s The Cuckoo on the kindle, and pulled the trigger on Adam Buxton’s follow up memoir in hardcover should be here in a couple of days.

I spent way too much time debating whether i should just buy everything on kindle, but figured the Buxton book will look good next to the first one, both hardcovers.

The Siege of Krishnapur by JG Farrell - not my thing really but the quality of his writing and humour drew me in. First novel I have read in ages. Weening myself off the phone.

John Le Carre - Smiley’s People. With this the Karla-trilogy finished. This is the most “normal” spy novel in the series, lots of hopping around Cold War Europe, though the hero is a sad old little fat guy, and not Jason Bourne. First Le Carre I’ve read I would say is a page turner.

I’ve always hated Le Carre on the basis we pitched in for a project with him and he went with someone else.

Was chuffed to bits when he carked it.

Cormac McCarthy - Blood Meridian.

Wow. Having read a few Stephen Graham Jones-novels lately the violence didn’t bother me that much, just the complete lack of empathy in the novel was pretty hard at times. Beautifully written, McCarthy certainly knew his way around the English language. Many a director has wanted to do a movie out of this, I’m not sure I want one done. To do it justice it would have to be pretty goddamn gruesome.

Stephen King - Never Flinch. Short review: avoid unless you’re a “read everything” King-head like me.

Longer review: Another Holly-book. I don’t have a problem with that per se, but I had with this one. It felt like one of the books in the Mr Mercedes-trilogy and I didn’t care for any of those. Plus he recycles one plot line from Insomnia whole sale, the self righteous feminist celebrity. I don’t think King has problems with feminists, but he clearly does with celebrity ones. YET, while this was easily his worst book since the awful sleeping beauties the man can still turn on the suspense at frightening ease. My heart was actually racing the last 60 minutes. And I did enjoy the now sober alcoholic serial killer who got addicted to killing people like it was alcohol, and realized what was happening.
