I got the new Stephen King today. It’s called Fairy Tale, and I breezed through the first 90 pages on one sitting, so it seems to be entertaining too.

I’ve told myself I won’t read that one as I’m not a fan of the more supernatural type stories he does, but no doubt I’ll get the paperback in due course.

Looking forward to Irvine Welsh’s new one which is just out.

Currently got Blake Crouch’s new one Upgrade on the go which is looking a bit meh so far but still interesting enough.

C_J I read the whole Bosch-book series through in 2018-2021, and while watching season 5 of the show I was confused as I had not read about an Oxy-ring in any of the books. Turns out I had bough Two Kinds of Truth, and then skipped it by accident when reading the books. So I have that still to read.

gcw yeah the quality’s been great since The Outsider too, that’s a comfortable six year stretch of quality writing as a guy in his seventies. I remember starting The Outsider, and not taking a break for the first 200 pages. He had a couple of stinkers before it, like Sleeping Beauties.

Homegrove the book, I didn’t bother with the show for that very reason!

Bosch - I’ve read them all through twice, second time was a good way to get through lockdown. Such easy books to read but also very enjoyable. The TV show wasn’t bad either.

Finished Roadwork last night, seems to be the less well received of the 3 it I quite enjoyed.

As with all Kings books is easy reading rather than purist literature, but that’s not always a bad thing.

Might go straight into the Running Man, because I LIVE ON THE FUCKING EDGE.

‘A desolation called peace’ - Arkady Martine - great follow up to ‘A memory called empire’. Really enjoyed it. 9/10

‘Rules of civility’ - Amor Towles - brilliantly written and nice to take a break from sci fi to depression era New York. 8/10

‘Shards of Earth’ - Adrian Tchaikovsky - back to sci fi. Seems pretty standard space opera fare so far but only half way through.

Just finished The Dream Factory, an insider look at football academies and how they operate. Insightful, revealing and quite a sad account of how exploitative they are. Recommended

alistair I know a few dads with lads in Academies in the Midlands….fairly brutal from what I hear. They pretty much know early on who will make it and want to concentrate on so build a team around a few players knowing they will bin the rest at some point.
