Just finished The Dream Factory, an insider look at football academies and how they operate. Insightful, revealing and quite a sad account of how exploitative they are. Recommended

alistair I know a few dads with lads in Academies in the Midlands….fairly brutal from what I hear. They pretty much know early on who will make it and want to concentrate on so build a team around a few players knowing they will bin the rest at some point.

Just finished the latest Rebus-novel from Ian Rankin. As enjoyble as always, but the end is definitely in sight. Also the first book I’ve read that takes place during Covid.

Also read Don Delillo’s White Noise before Noah Baumach’s upcoming adaptation for Netflix. Very interested to see how the hell did he film that book.

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells. Fifth novella, which it turns out should be read before Network Effect 🙄. Much better than NE.

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi. Entertaining AF. Highly recommended. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was already in production filmwise.

Horrorstör, Grady Hendrix. Not terrible, not great, humorous premise. What I really enjoyed was the bad guy- Very well crafted and creepy, and thoroughly fleshed out.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow. Surprisingly, this book did live up to the hype. Very recommended.

The Spider by Leo Carew. Fan fucking tastic! It’s the follow-up to The Wolf, which I previously recommended.

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix. Surprisingly satisfying. Nothing schlocky or paranormal, just weird and murderous.

Currently reading Noor by Nnedi Okorafor. I really enjoy what she’s been bringing to science fiction.

Klara and the sun - Kazuo Ishiguro - decent, although not the balls to the wall masterpiece people are saying it is. I get the feeling those people don’t read much sci fi because most of the themes have been done already. Still, thought provoking and worth a read. 8 / 10

Ishiguro’s books aren’t balls to the wall though are they.

Agree about the theme, even with the same author, though does provide a different twist.

That said I prefer his slow burn style. And like quite a lot of Japanese fiction for similar reasons

Wally …enjoyed it, although currently reading McEwan’s ‘Machines Like Me’ which I think I prefer. Explores similar themes but set in an alternate history 1980’s when the UK has lost the Falklands war and Turing has cracked AI, really good.

…btw, speaking of Ishiguro, would recommend ‘The Buried Giant’, trippy medieval fantasy about the memory’s ability to bury trauma and guilt. Hard to describe but thought it was mega imaginative, loved it.

Joe Abercrombie - The First Law Trilogy is worth a look.

Kevin Hearne’s The Seven Kennings trilogy, beginning with A Plague of Giants. Book 3 is written, currently in edits iirc, estimated release June 2023. Instead of sorcery though, it’s more ‘magic with consequences’.

Although he’s more known for sci-fi, Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Echoes of the Fall series is wonderful. Book 1 is The Tiger and The Wolf.
