Just browsing through some stuff on band camp today and ran across a couple really strange sub-genres and was wondering what other weird things were out there šŸ˜‚

The two I saw today:

Witch House (for real)
Math Rock

WTF are these? šŸ˜‚ What other sub-genres have you seen that just make no damn sense?

Along_the_Wire Hahaā€¦fairā€¦.I donā€™t know how to edit it, but if any mods wanna update, Iā€™m good šŸ˜‚

Havenā€™t much else from them but remember Atlas being a tune

Resident advisor is an absolute hoot and terrific source of previously unknown genres.

ā€œThis monthā€™s guest mix comes from Terry Tongues Testicles, with a mix of absolute fire from the Peruvian Pigmy Funky Hempcore scene.ā€

-si- Peruvian Pigmy Funky Hempcore scene

      Colour me interested.

      Amps

Not any worse than fucking ā€œOrganic House.ā€ Absolute tripe with the tunes to match.

      -si-

LOL yeah. Resident Advisor is the worst website on the internet.

Resistant adviser is so cool itā€™s into music that hasnā€™t been released yet

      Kells77 apparently ā€˜Aggrotechā€™ exists ā€¦

      Crust Punk/Stenchcore sounds fun too!

      Kells77 Witch House (for real)

Witch House was relatively big about 10 years ago, not so much of it about nowadays though.

It was almost single-handedly defined by the band Salem, whose 2010 album King Night remains overlooked and under-rated.

This track off it is still a banger:

bosstrabs Coolā€¦but why is is called ā€œMath Rockā€? WTF is that about? lol

hugopal Hmmā€¦.Iā€™ve never heard of this band or genre but the nameā€™s weird AF šŸ˜‚ Other than a synth, Iā€™m not sure what makes this house music at all

One other thing of Salemā€™s I have to post just for how outrageous it is, taken from one of their EPs. Also fairly typical stylistically for the witch house genre as a whole.

Iā€™m still not entirely sure if itā€™s brilliant or ear-assaultingly offensive (though the video is great with it):

Kells77 the ā€œhouseā€ part of the genre name is definitely misleading and a bit of a misnomer. The ā€œwitchā€ part of the genre description makes sense as it was/is all very goth-y, with lots of dark, drone-y synths, and lots of satanic, occultist and medieval imagery.

Musically it is very firmly in the electronic music camp, but in form it has more in common with ambient and experimental electronica, though also sometimes trap, breakbeats, pop and even techno. I guess ā€œwitch houseā€ just sounded cooler than say ā€œwitch electronicaā€ and the house part was enough to just signify that it was electronic.

              Kells77 Math Rock

I have less awareness of where math rock is or isnā€™t today, but remember when it first appeared and what it refers to - generally intricate, technical, rhythmic-focused, largely instrumental rock music. Itā€™s a bit less of a coherent ā€œsceneā€ than witch house was, and is/was more generally attached to a fairly broad range of bands albeit with some particular sound characteristics. I can kind of understand why the intricate, instrumental nature of it gained it the ā€œmathā€ tag.

The band Battles were one of the first to have the tag attached to them (see below). This album came out on Warp actually.

The band ā€˜Foalsā€™ were also described as math rock pretty often in their early years. The similarity in sound to Battles is fairly apparent.

              Kells77 Witch House

when i submit tracks for playlists and whatever, there is no option for dub techno. ever. yet somehow witch house is always there. i must be old, itā€™s just ridiculous.

hugopal Yeah, that makes sense! And witch house DOES sound cooler than witch electronica lol

303abuser I think itā€™s a sign that you need to have more witch house in your bag/hard drive šŸ˜‚

Kells77 i chose to shake my fist and yell at the neighbourhood kids to stay off my lawn instead.

Linear skynard and pink Floydā€™s seminal The Long Division Bell are classics of the math rock genre in our houseā€¦

-si- In my house, Toolā€™s Aenima counts as Math Rock, because thereā€™s a song title with a math problem in it on that album (46 & 2) šŸ˜‚

                      • -si- replied to this.

                        303abuser Donā€™t forget a menacing stare! Thatā€™s what seals the deal šŸ˜‚

                        Kells77

Itā€™s all open to interpretation, Kells.

Math rock is a state of mind, not just something thatā€™s easily pigeon holed by supposed classics of the genre.

-si- Yeah I was kiddingā€¦I still donā€™t really know what math rock means, but I appreciate the examples people have given. I never really thought of Foals as anything but indie rock, but as you said, itā€™s all interpretation šŸ™‚
