What grinder are you using Jules?
That machine looks the nuts
It does taste better but that could be something to do with not descaled my rocket ever (no idea)… the foam is also way smoother…
Cool - I’ve got my eye on a new single-doser the Solo which Bella Barista have just opened up pre-orders for. The Sage Smart Grinder Pro does a job, but think this will be much better. Can still sell the SGP for £150 or so, which is only £50 less than what I paid for it.

It’s very new - flat burrs. I’ve been considering a Niche for a while now, but then this has just been released and comes in at £100 less than a Niche and without the months waiting on it.
Seems like it is the best bang for buck flat burr single dosing grinder on the market - virtually zero retention as you can pump the grinds through the chute with the bellows at the top.

Taking pre-orders at the moment and coming in at the end of the month. £400 - I want to see the pics of metallic black before I pull the trigger
Jules has failed to mention he runs a coffee shop.
Yeah there’s a very well respected machine reviewer on that Coffee Forum UK who has been testing the Solo I’m looking at for a few months now. He’s making very positive noises about it so I’m fairly confident it’s the teal deal.
Not many on there rate the grinder I have so I’m expecting a massive improvement on the coffee with the new grinder.
It’s opened my eyes a little to the world of coffee tasting. It does come across as very snobby. My hole machine cost less than £200 and it does make a good cup of coffee compared to some coffee shops.
Lol yes mate for sure. It’s definitely a rabbit hole.
Am looking into getting a new grinder ((I currently have a blade one, which now realise isn’t great). Anyone have experience of manual burr grinders? Am thinking of this route as much cheaper than electric, and I only ever do coffee for one, so seems like could be a decent option to start with. Saves going to the gym too
Depends on your budget really. I might be selling my grinder soon. It’s a Sage Smart Grinder Pro which I bought last June. It’s in pretty much mint condition and has had about ⅞ kilos through it and has been cleaned between beans. I’m selling as I’ve seen a new single dosing grinder that I like the look of.
What type of coffee would you want to make with it?
Cool - OK so I last year I bought my first coffee set up for home. I spent a hell of a lot of time researching what to buy before doing so. I was put onto the Coffee Forum UK site by I think Dubbers and I have spent a lot of time on that forum since as the various machines / grinders etc. have piqued my interest since dipping my toe.
The people on that forum are a lot more knowledgeable and experienced by myself (some can be quite snobby when it comes to equipment), but the general rule of thumb is that most hand grinders are not suitable for espresso - they can’t grind fine or consistent enough - blade grinders even less so. You can get hand-grinders that will do a good job, but you are into the £120 plus range for Made By Knock Aergrind or above. I got quite a shock at the prices of hand grinders.
If you prefer electric - the Sage Smart Grinder Pro is a stepped grinder with 60 settings which can pretty much do it all. (there are also 10 different burr settings, so technically this opens up to 600 settings, although in reality you never need that many settings). There are pros and cons of stepped grinders in that you can remember what grind setting works best on which bean, and it is very easy to change between settings with the LCD display. It gets mixed reviews on the CFUK Forum - but in terms of bang for buck it is hard to beat at the price. If you wanted to spend a little more, the Eureaka Mignon Manuelle is pretty widely regarded as a great lower range grinder. It’s stepless so might make changing between settings more tricky than something like the Sage SGP. Pricewise you’re looking at about £200 for the Sage and £250 for the Eureka Mignon brand new. If you buy used you can probably get both for £50 less than new (maybe less if they are out of warantee periods), but both tend to hold their value quite well
