You had a play with the pioneer efx 500 / 1000?

Mad_Cyril …not really, had an RMX1000 for a bit, fun bit of kit, very user-friendly FX when used at a basic level, and pretty deep if you want to get into the software/programming side of it.

The EFX’s were mega popular, but imagine the audio quality would be pretty ropey by today’s standards…. you wouldn’t want to hook one up to a decent quality analogue mixer, that’s for sure 😉

Looks nice but think I need something a bit more entry level, less fluid, to help me learn.

The Mastersounds efx is great I’m sure but it doesn’t really have the more basic outputs like echos and things, is more like an instrument.

It’s a big learning curve, maybe I need a speak n’ spell 😃

Mad_Cyril …main reason I got shot is because I realise I don’t really use effects that much. The RMX sounded great and def had all the sounds you’d ever want (& ability to combine them etc), but I’d just forget it was there most of the time.

A lot of the rotary/audiophile lot rave about obscure guitar pedals and mega expensive effects units (like the Zen Delay above), but reality is that they are not remotely optimised for DJ’s and are practically uncontrollable in a live context for the most part… auto BPM sync is mega important (don’t think the MS has it) and the Pio is really good in this respect. If the RMX1000 is overkill, how about the 500?

The MS I have does have beat synch but the FX aren’t really what I want - a little left field.

I need something simple and controllable, preferably not too expensive. That I can use to;

A) Lob delays and shit in.
B) obscure ropey mixing

Some obscure Bolivian teak wah wah pedal isn’t for me, even if it looks nice with house plants and sounds totes amaze!!

It looks really good too, although I think I’d take the zen delay first as I’ve got a few space echo emulations already. I’m hoping the ipad setup I’m running keeps the gas at bay for a while.

Mad_Cyril Mixer send to an ipad/computer with software fx is a decent setup, just maybe not super portable if you need that. Looking at pedals, there might be some deals on used strymon stuff with the v2 update last week. Deco and bluesky would make nice companions. 😉

…RMX500 or a 2nd hand 1000 sounds your best bet. Can’t promise it’ll obscure the dodgy mixes tho!

It pains me to say it but I think your logic is good (voice on your shoulder: buy an XZ, they sell used for nearly what they cost new 😉 )

NasserAlazzawi I would have loved to have picked one up as they look great, but had to weigh up all the pros and cons really. Pros were I can afford it and it looks nice, cons were I’ve never used digital before, I wouldn’t know where to start with it and I’ve no plans to play out so it just would be knocking mixes up for my own use.

If I take to the DDJ-400 and get halfway competent with it, I am deffo not ruling out upgrading down the line.

gcw you’re probably right, but you’ll get rid and have an XZ no time, but you won’t lose too much selling the 400 in 6 months. Losing the laptop is my favourite thing - it’s amazing how much you just know how tunes work without the crutches.

Think I’ll pick up something like an EFX unit cheap, no great loss if it doesn’t work.

Complicated, fiddly or computer-related setup doesn’t really work now I’ve moved to some Media Players and a mixer

Mad_Cyril Yeah fair enough. The ipad works great if you already have one that’s capable and an audio interface to connect it to the mixer, as the apps are pretty cheap. A good delay and reverb will probably cover most of what you need, so a couple of cheap pedals might be as good or better than an all in one box. Lots of options now.

I’m still a while away from using and enjoying FX skilfully - getting to grips with loops is where I’m at.
