I’m using Rekordbox and Traktor side by side now, wouldn’t want a third software!
DJ setups/Mixer porn/New toys thread...
…genuinely haven’t decided though, now the money is banked I’m having a wobble!
I have just been offered a pair of Mackie MR6 Mk3 Active monitors for £120. My budget is quite small and they are in good nick. Worth it or nah? Anybody had any experience of them?
Homegrove …the size of the screens on these new players, you might as well be looking at a laptop. The Pioneer’s (the smaller of the two), is 9.5 inches.
Unfortunately converting Rekordbox libraries to Engine Prime (Denon) format seems to be one of the less reliable parts of the migration process, lots of talk about inconsistent grids etc.
The Denon players will read RB formatted USB’s, but I suspect you’d be missing out on a large number of the features if you didn’t make Engine Prime your main library software.
I’ve never moved any tracks across different softwares, I do all the stuff like checking the grid, adding cues and loops on both on all new tracks. Identical playlists…. Not really a pain in the ass on a weekly basis, but fucking hell moving a whole collection….
RB, annoyingly, wont take cues from Mixed in Key, so can fuck right off for me
I fucking hated RB when I had my CDJ900s and moved to SC5000s, so using Engine Prime is equally painful. As i’m an old git, nothing beats a big box of 12s as your “mix palette” . All software ive used equally painful, from Beatport through to RD/EP/Traktor until you actually get to play music
Unbroken1 how come you sold the XDJ’s mate? Been looking at the mk2s recently myself.
IndustryStandard nothing beats a big box of 12s as your “mix palette” .
That’s great bro, but does it suit your ‘workflow’
Homegrove …moved from RB to Traktor and back again. Tried some software tools that were supposed to facilitate conversion (Rekord Buddy was one I think?), none of which worked for me, so yeah… v reluctant to change again!
Mad_Cyril …I do use MIK, but have never used it to set cue points tbh, if I’m going to do them I’ll do it in RB.
mono-stereo …I’d owned the original CDJ2000’s (pre-Nexus) in 2009′ish, loved the concept and was a Pio beta tester for a while, but tbh the software was glitchy as hell and not up to the task at the time. Was fed-up with laptop DJ’ing after a few years in the Traktor wilderness so bought the XDJ’s 2nd hand as a ‘test’ as I wanted a portable/plug-and-play solution and to see how RB had progressed. While I couldn’t fault them, the XDJ’s are nearing the end of their product cycle and will likely be replaced soon, so sold them while they still held decent value.
Mad_Cyril I spend so much time achieving very little with searching/buying/organizing tracks to finally get a batch ready for a mix. It’s like a bloody work project! At the moment I have around 200 tracks in my “current” Itunes playlist I want to whittle down to a couple of hours worth for a mix. Horrendous . By the time thats complete and i’ve putzed around in EP/Traktor the tunes will be out of date!
I may have to assess my “workflow”
IndustryStandard It’s the bit I enjoy the least myself.
I’ll typically buy 50 or so tunes and then listen to them all in one go and rank them - I listen to them a few times more and tweak the ranks as I go. The five star tracks go into a new playlist and I build the mix from there - if I need something to fit, I’ll either get one of the better tracks from the four star ranks or delve into my classics folder.
Unbroken1 Tried some software tools that were supposed to facilitate conversion (Rekord Buddy was one I think?), none of which worked for me, so yeah…
Exact same problem I’m dealing with now since getting the 700’s. Nothing is recognizing the other format, software converters either don’t work properly or don’t exist at all, and you’re left staring at 1,000+ tunes that need to be manually tagged/analyzed. Hooray free time?
deathbysmurf depending on how the track’s meta data is stored, sounds like you might be better off scripting it with a bash script or python etc.
deathbysmurf …it’s mental isn’t it? ironically, this is where on-board track analysis would be useful, at least you could do the tracks as you need/want to play them
