…good releases on both, I honestly don’t get the hate. I deffo appreciate that ADID are renowned for a particular sound, but if you don’t get hamstrung by that stuff, there’s plenty to like, between them, TRYBESof and Tale&Tone they have an excellent roster of artists, Valdovinos, Tim Green, Volen Sentir, Newman etc. Do I like everything they release? no, but I do appreciate a dose of melody (mixed with other flavours, obv) and they are capable of doing it extremely well.

Anjuna are way more hit and miss IMO, mainly because they are like a fucking hits factory for anything vaguely in the melodic prog/house/trance spectrum, and a LOT of it is shite. Basically they release far too much, and its easy to miss the good stuff. Been watching Marsh’s streams over the last few months, he’s a really good DJ IMO, and his productions are strong (until he goes ‘retro’, which for him is fucking 2000’s trance).

Unbroken1 It comes down to personal taste in the end. ADID is a sound I could never get into. The whole ‘Organic House’ sound is one I can’t get into and seems to have risen in popularity these past few years with the likes of Nick Warren and Cattaneo playing that sound in their sets. With it’s rise in popularity there is more of it to wade thru which only gives rise to my aversion to it. 😅 That being said there are tracks that rise to the top but because of the shear amount being released every week they are few and far between.

I’m a big fan of your mixes Damo which are full of what i’d class as ‘Organic House’ tracks. But that has more to do with your ability to pick the best of whats out there and your skill in putting these tracks together in a mix. I wouldn’t buy most of the tracks you play but that’s just down to my own taste.

It honestly might have something to do with where I live, Damo. The Burning Man thing is really a thing around this way. The ADID sound is ubiquitous and synonymous with the Burners and the greater tech industry (which many of us cannot stand). It just comes across as Instagram House or something. Dance music for people who don’t dance - House for “stories”. And, hey, I’m not telling anyone they’re not allowed to like it. It’s just not for me.

..appreciate all you are saying, but not sure why ADID gets consigned to being a label with a ‘sound’ that is a rigid, closed space where no-one listens to anything else? I’ve never been to an ADID party, nor do I live anywhere where there are associations with any particular scene. They are a label among fucking thousands, but I happen to like aspects of the current melodic house sound and I think their hit rate is better than most. I don’t recognise ‘Organic House’ in the same way I don’t recognise ‘Progressive House’ (which means something entirely different from 20 years ago), all of that is bollocks innit??

I like to think that the majority are like me… ie. not wearing beads, pouting and making heart-hands for their Insta stories, but picking out the odd gem and mixing it with bangers from Jimpster, DJ T and Dominic Eulberg.

I get where @jonattonyeah is coming from. When I first came across ADID there was from my own perspective a definite link to that “Instagram House”. I think it’s because the ‘Organic House’ or ADID sound is very accessible and easy to listen to therefore the ‘Instagram crowd’ (people who want to be seen at festivals; wearing beads, pouting and making heart-hands for their Insta stories) gravitate towards it.

I agree on what you’re saying about labels. Progressive House is miles away from what it was 20-25 years ago and has been for a long time. But I suppose you have to call different styles a name otherwise trawling thru Beatport etc would be a baffling ordeal. Genres of Music have been around since day one and will continue to be.

SM001 …I dunno, I don’t have those associations, so maybe its easier to cherry-pick tracks that I like without the baggage, but I do find it weird that people don’t make the same assumptions about folk that listen to other, popular (in a v niche, middle-aged way) labels.

Regarding genres, if you don’t use them it genuinely isn’t a problem… the only filter should be, '‘who has made stuff in the past that I like’, be it producers or labels, I honestly can’t think of a single occasion where I’ve searched something on the basis of it being ‘organic’ or ‘progressive’

The Mass Digital-remix of Nelly Furtado is the only thing I can remember liking of that sound in a long time. I follow ADID, trybesOF etc, but haven’t found anything worth buying there in a long time.

I think it caught up in the whole EDM gold rush/movement in America. An association that some labels/producers are happy to be still apart of in one form or another or who are still trying to shake off.

I think everyone who loves dance music have their prejudices when it comes to certain genres. I listen to alot of tracks every week and always listen with an open mind. I follow ADID and Anjunadeep on Beatport etc because I know that every once in a while there will be a track I like. Although my heart does sink when there is a ADID compilation album on the Friday promo drop. 😆

But like you I don’t follow labels or producers on eg Beatport because they’ve been given a certain label. It’s because like you said; '‘who has made stuff in the past that I like".

ADID has certainly pushed a sound. It’s even in the “All Day I Dream” name. Personally, I don’t want to dream when it comes to dance music. I like raw, head-down raving or House that reminds me of better, younger days. If I wanted butterflies and rainbows I’d listen to Phil Collins. They release music I wouldn’t be surprised to hear at a dentist’s office. I don’t think I have pigeonholed them, I think they did that to themselves as a BM cash grab. It’s lazy paint-by-numbers House - light kick, floaty minor chord melody, annoying bassline, generic percussion. I know what an ADID release will sound like before I even hear it. Innervisions is the same way. But I find them far more frustrating as they used to release just flat out good music. Now they release “Innervisions” as if it’s a sound in and of itself.

jonattonyeah I agree with ADID, but not Innervisions. There are still right bangers in their recent catalogue too. The new Jimi Jules is my favorite track of the year so far.

I don’t think you can completely pigeonhole Anjunadeep (well at least like ADID) when they release tracks like the latest Hammer remix of Dosem which is banging. Dixon and Ame used to cain the Port remix of Cubicolor’s No dancers and dropped the Baumel remix of Dead End Thrills in London. Dixon also played the Dj Boring remix of CRI a while back. Digweed and Sasha play some of their stuff, especially the breaks. It’s just that they release a lot and much of it is fairy anodyne. I also think the Marsh streams are quality

I find all labels and styles get too much at times depending on mood. I am surprised by the volume of releases and can’t keep up generally. But as ever, 1 in x is a proper keeper.
