Had a much better time than I was expecting lonely, sober-ish clubbing at Sasha last night. Busy but not rammed and I prefer the Mint Warehouse to the Mint Club and the venue and crowd were in a different league to when he played in Leeds last time at Back To Basics at ‘Church’ by the universities which was shit.
Sentre were better than expected but expectations were low. After the opening half of their set, They were wellying it out way too hard for a warm up job. Cracking peak time tunes for most of thier set and at least their set had a bit of flow and direction about it though instead of being all over the place. Still maintain that warm up DJing seems to be a thing of the past these days. They brought it down a few notches when Sasha got security escorted into the place and to the booth 10 mins before going on.
Didn’t get to see any of Charlie May other than wandering in and out the room occassionally as he started late but it sounded good. The second room was empty though.
Sasha was a bit hit and miss. First half an hour was housier stuff including a vocal track that was crazy good. He then oddly shifted into pots and pans techno for half an hour. Zackster would have been proud. Dunno if it’s because Leeds is supposed to have a thing for the Cocoon sound but it wasn’t enjoyable to listen to. He started getting more melodic and driving in the second hour (he absolutely train wrecked the fuck out of one mix but almost managed to rescue himself with the EFX lol) and it started getting a lot better as he went on. End of the second hour he was well into his stride banging it out with every tune a winner. I left at around 3am (taking my kid to football in 30 mins - ouch) about 2/3rds into his set. He seemed to be in a good mood. Shaking hands with people and egging the crowd on.
Great to see Matty and his Mrs. Really glad I went down. Sober straight headed billy no mates clubbing. It’s the future! lol.
