Disc 2 of Digweed’s Fabric - because even though it doesn’t exist, unlike the Disc 1 at least I didn’t waste my time and money on it.
Disc 2s of Superior Quality
Have just been enjoying Cape Town disk two.
James Lavelle Romania Disc 2 better than Disc 1.
Prove me wrong!
You would have to time travel back to 2004 and fish it out of your bin.
I have such fond memories of Rhouses defending that release with such gusto. Less than a year later we found out that GU had gone bankrupt and that Barcelona was the first of several court ordered releases, the purposes of which were to generate capital to pay back the parties they ripped off, one of which was John Digweed.
Imagine being one of those people who collected all the ‘longbox’ editions and therefore had to put up with Lavelle - Bangkok on your shelves, as though you were into it.
benson I don’t think so, but I could be wrong. Iircc the story was pieced together from various articles and quotes. Some notable moments I remember are as follows:
- Puff piece on Andy Horseface being at the helm of GU. Hidden inside was a bit about James heading to Japan(?) to coach soccer. In retrospect he was clearly getting the fuck out of Dodge before the shit hit the fan.
- Article in Dj or Mixmag about GU being acquired by Ministry of Sound. I think this was where most the concrete facts came from. Said they went bankrupt, money was owed ex ex…
- Digweed was asked about working with GU again and he said something about them being boat buying wankers, and that he never saw a dime for Hong Kong or L.A.
There was definitely more, but those are the three things that stand out in my mind.
Oh and there was an article or a board post or something about the last days of the GU offices. Employees talked about being owed months of back pay, showing up to locked doors, embarrassing tasks they were given as part of their jobs ex ex.
It’s clear that changing the message board killed the brand.
Who owns it now BTW?
I always assumed that they killed the board as part of the sale/take over. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to come in, appraise the situation, and realize that there was no way of moving forward with that sewer openly flowing. We obviously loved it, but when you want to move into the world of selling luggage tags to euro trash you really can’t have a fully functional message board running wild.
Romania being cop.
Give it a (bucha) rest
Christ that is dreadfully shoe-horned.

Ark at Billy Business-man here!

Overall, GU34: Milan is a mixed affair and a mixed blessing: it shows Global Underground’s willingness to open its door to unlikely and unexpected figures, but it only half-successfully helps reassessing Felix’s own credentials as a DJ and, most importantly, a taste-maker. That said, anything (such as CD1) that can make you forget so easily the guy’s horrendous latest attempt at the long-player format is more than satisfying by me.
Not my words Stuart, the words of RA!
Imagine sitting down with your media consultant for the first uncomfortable conversation and at the top of his yellow legal pad you see “Dermot Mulligan” in a huge red Sharpie circle.
LOL!

You fuckin beauty!!!! Destroyed my mothers house and hit the jackpot!! @bosstrabs
Can’t see Diggers doing LA if he got shafted with Hong Kong. He’s a savvy business man is uncle John.
Did hear they fucked loads of people over though.
Oh I am 100% sure it was Digweed who said that. Perhaps it was just for LA, but I could swear it was both. He specifically referenced the boat in the Getting Away With It documentary, which makes me think Hong Kong was included due to the time frame.

Just listened to Jimmy Van M’s Bedrock again and think I’m siding with CD2.
CD1 has some monster tunes in ‘Control Of Sound’, ‘Barotek’ and ‘Lacuna’, but enjoyed CD2 from start to finish more.
That is a tough call. Not sure I agree, but I absolutely think it is up for debate. I also just listened to that one the other day. I will say this: he seriously bangs it out on that one. I forgot how fast and heavy he gets. He really lets it rip in the center to the end of disc 2. That was honestly the last time prog was good.
ScottBailey Barotek
Is that the Bill Hammel track? If so, that is indeed a fucking ripper.
zackster it is indeed. Andy Moor, Bill Hamel & Innate. One of my favourite tracks.
Yeah man. Yum Yum into Control of Sound, into that one is a great chain of tunes.
If you took the second Janiero out of CD2 and replaced it with Barotek, it’d be a one sided fight for me. That middle section on CD1 is filth, but I think the first 20 minutes let it dowm.
aah I actually really like the Rui da Silva mix!

Liked CD3 of his balance

I scrambled for anything wirh JvM’s name on it back in the day. He was a bit of an unknown entity on these shores, just popping up on Kiss 100 from time to time. Seemed to go off his game in the late 2010’s and goodness only knowns where he’s at now! Assuming the DJing took a back seat for the agency side of the business…

Isn’t it the ‘Blackwatch’ Threshold Dub remix.
