Putin just won’t accept NATO up on his borders. To a degree this is understandable. There have been various promises made, particularly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, to not expand NATO eastward past the Elbe, which have been broken.
But part of it is he sees successful, democratic countries ‘taking control of their own destiny’ on his border as a threat because it demonstrates to the people of all these miserable countries under Russia’s thumb, like Belarus, what they can actually have. So there’s an element of him just being a fucking cunt who needs dealt with.
