Hursty we were namely independent, the Soviet Union just didn’t see it that way. They were also our biggest outside market and the collapse of the USSR led to the biggest recession Finland has seen in the early 90s. But you could certainly say we were not independent of Russia before joining the EU in 1995. Some older politicians still carry the hangover from those days and feel Finland should check if it’s ok with Russia before making any decisions. They’ve just kept those opinions to themselves lately lol.
