To the people saying this is a grift. Are you saying that the US and European taxpayers should just continue to fund an ongoing conflict with Russia (and their various proxies and supporters) forever? No end date? As long as it takes?
I’m not sure that’s possible. Mathematically I mean. We don’t have enough money. Not if we need to keep on paying pensions and social security etc. It’s not unreasonable for the US to be seeking a financial interest here. If I was Zelensky I would be desperate to let the US get their noses in the trough asap (and as you might have noticed, Zelensky IS desperate to get that deal done). If the US think it’s worth $500bn then let’s get their guys over there on the ground and see how Putin feels about dropping ordinance on Ukraine then.
By the way, the figure of $500bn is quite speculative. The true value could be much more or much less. Let’s hope it’s not less, otherwise saving Ukraine from the Russians could become an expensive luxury.
