Instead it’s the fact I’m an old cunt. Playing football 3 nights a week still, two 5 a sides and a 9 a side game in between. My knees and ankles are finding recovery harder. I’m only turning 44 this year for fuck sake. Anyone on anything or recommend anything to help the joints not feel like I’m 84?

      Theres your answer. 😅 Plenty of stretching before but more importantly after exercising. Isometric exercises. It might be time to hang up the boots and try some cross training. At your age (mine too) your body will require longer to recover.

      No expert on this but a few things off the top of my head from having similar issues. I used to play a lot of squash so my knees, back and ankles were always in a mess and tried a variety of things like:

      • cod liver oil supplement
      • strapping the knee/ankle if really painful
      • strengthening exercises (highly recommend this if you have weaknesses in particular joints/muscles)
      • warm up exercises to target the problematic body areas rather than just going straight at it on the field (stretching as others have said above but I think dynamic warm up movements that are specific to the activity you are doing are important).
      • I used to put Deep Heat on for the same reason as above as it warms up the joints and activates the muscles
      • ibuprofen
      • massage, soaking your joints in a hot bath afterwards

      I’m riddled (my Dr’s words…) with arthritis. I have friends that swear by glucosamine chondroitin, but never really did anything for me.

      Have noticed a significant improvement taking a daily turmeric supplement. Been using these for about a year now, and can’t see me stopping…

          My mum has this. Anything inflammatory makes it worse, as does a damp climate.

          She was impressed by CBD oil (and a new development in it called CBG) by this company (your dose will differ, you have to get it right - an overdose produces no results as does an underdose - typically you’ll need 2 drops or 3 under the tongue for 5 minutes, it kicks in in about an hour and gives you 6 hours coverage so re-dose at 5 hours)

          Cut out all sugars and carbs as someone else said. I think I heard Milk too is inflammatory. Alcohol is also on the list unfortunately.

          There are amazing diet plans you can stick to that solve a lot of this. If you really want to go all in you can learn the Ayurvedic Diet to Manage Arthritis if that’s what this is the beginning of.

          The sooner you jump onto the solution the better if it is.

            As has been mentioned, Turmeric is a good one. Can give heartburn though. A bit of ginger (which is also anti-inflammatory and helps with heartburn) should help to counteract that.

            Read a thing this week about how mind bendingly deadly vegetable oil is. In terms of death rate / life span, having fast food that has been deep fried is the equivalent of smoking 20 fags.

            But the important bit for you @-si- is the fact that veg oil is an inflammatory and will massively fuck over your joints. So switch to plain butter and swerve the fast food or anything else that will have been cooked in veg oil of any sort. Trickier than it sounds.

            Regards the footy, I fair a lot better these days if I do a proper warm up and a bit of yoga… I’d want twenty minutes on the bike before I went for a run.

                I thought we were all middle class Guardian readers on here? I only cook using olive oil, butter, or groundnut oil (if I’m making Chinese - you can’t use olive oil for wok cooking unless you have Red Adair on hand to put your kitchen out).

                Does anyone here seriously eat fast food more than about twice a week? I don’t.

                  Used to do the same with keto and fasting and definitely felt the energy was ‘missing’ in the gym. Tried getting in the gym earlier in the day to lessen the effect. I think I ended up trying to coordinate so I would have eaten on the workout day. Either way though, I found I would be either exhausted at the gym itself or later in the day (if I was fasting for the rest of the day). I reckon it was probably to with not taking in sufficient nutrients (setting myself up here) and should have taken some sort of supplement.
