Thanks man. I’ve actually been through that one already. Raised more questions than it provided answers. People in there are sending their laptops back to Mac, which is completely moronic. There is absolutely no way that these macbooks wont be able to support audio interfaces, which is what they are acting like.
no worries, i just skimmed most of it anyways. like most tech stuff, it works for most people and usually the solution is pretty simple, then there are a few outliers. if it makes you feel any better, i currently own 4 interfaces and 2 usb hubs. i like my setup, but every time there’s a major tech upgrade, it’s going to cost me $1k in peripherals.
this is why i love apple hardware and hate their business model. the thunderbolt hub was $250 on it’s own, new keyboard, new mouse, a variety of cables and adapters, it just never ends. standard protocols for connecting devices needs to be legislated.
that hub thing was so obnoxious. I held out getting a new laptop for several years in anticipation of this new book. They brought back ports, which is nice. Three thunderbolt, one DMI, Audio In, and memory card slots are available again.
the mac mini is lacking a bit when it comes to ports, but it’s also a lot cheaper i guess. once soundtoys is m1 compatible, i’ll probably do the ableton 11 upgrade and see what this machine is really capable of.
Just installed 11 today, as it happens. Can’t really take it for a spin yet as I can’t connect any of my gear until I get this fucking interface issue resolved!
let me know how it goes, i’m really curious to see how much faster it is running everything native. now that i’ve wrapped up all of the tracks i’ve been working on, minus an ongoing collaboration, i think i’m going to be spending a lot more time writing on hardware for a while.
This makes me think I will be good to go.

Looks like firewire is no longer viable, which is annoying, but I will still give it a go with USB than decide if I need to upgrade or not. Have to go get thunderbolt dongles now and a new power supply for my MK3 as it died years ago.
“Using Motu are you Zachary?”
I use a motu m2 with my M1 mac and it works OK, although that might have somthing to do with it using native usb c.
