  • Any Motu users on here?

Just got a new laptop, and can’t find a driver for my Motu MK3 Ultralite audio interface that is compatible with osMonterey. I highly suspect I am going to have to buy a new audio interface, which will leave me steaming. Have had the MK3 for ages, and it still functions perfectly. Do not feel like shelling out an additional $600 to replace a piece of perfectly good gear. Anyone have any experiences with Motu? Are they the type of co that will stop supporting old products? The MK3 is/was a widely used piece of gear, and I’d find it shocking if they just completely stoped supporting it.

is it an m1 mac? i think i’ve read about issues with the motu interfaces and the silicon chips, but that’s about as much as i can help.

it is the m1. Looks like the mk5 would work, but I might end up binning off Motu depending on how this resolves.

Thanks man. I’ve actually been through that one already. Raised more questions than it provided answers. People in there are sending their laptops back to Mac, which is completely moronic. There is absolutely no way that these macbooks wont be able to support audio interfaces, which is what they are acting like.

no worries, i just skimmed most of it anyways. like most tech stuff, it works for most people and usually the solution is pretty simple, then there are a few outliers. if it makes you feel any better, i currently own 4 interfaces and 2 usb hubs. i like my setup, but every time there’s a major tech upgrade, it’s going to cost me $1k in peripherals.

303abuser I hear yah man. If I didn’t spring for the M1 Max book I wouldn’t be so putout, but this thing already cost so much that adding an additional $600-$700 to the bill is driving me crazy. I have had the mk3 for ever so I guess I can’t really complain.

this is why i love apple hardware and hate their business model. the thunderbolt hub was $250 on it’s own, new keyboard, new mouse, a variety of cables and adapters, it just never ends. standard protocols for connecting devices needs to be legislated.

that hub thing was so obnoxious. I held out getting a new laptop for several years in anticipation of this new book. They brought back ports, which is nice. Three thunderbolt, one DMI, Audio In, and memory card slots are available again.

the mac mini is lacking a bit when it comes to ports, but it’s also a lot cheaper i guess. once soundtoys is m1 compatible, i’ll probably do the ableton 11 upgrade and see what this machine is really capable of.

Just installed 11 today, as it happens. Can’t really take it for a spin yet as I can’t connect any of my gear until I get this fucking interface issue resolved!

let me know how it goes, i’m really curious to see how much faster it is running everything native. now that i’ve wrapped up all of the tracks i’ve been working on, minus an ongoing collaboration, i think i’m going to be spending a lot more time writing on hardware for a while.

zackster no more firewire was the main reason i had to scrap my old interface. hopefully you get it sorted out, this stuff is always such a pain.

303abuser I hear yah. I am going to give it a go, but I suspect I will be doing the same. I am expecting there to be delay/latency issues, which defeats the point of buying a Rolls-Royce laptop in the first place.

zackster it was adapter on top of adapter on top of adapter or a new interface. it took me almost an entire weekend to rewire my studio in december and my setup isn’t even that complicated. it’s pretty magical the first time it’s all working together though.

I use a motu m2 with my M1 mac and it works OK, although that might have somthing to do with it using native usb c.
