Pre-lunch cheeky square of Bournville in the Vectra.

hugopal Good tune, but not their best. While fronted by Mancunian (well, Mancunian like New Order - Mansfield) Mark Holmes, these guys were Canadian and were the hottest shit in Canada during the 1980s since a bear walked a path. I wasn’t aware they’d had success outside of the country (because most bands from Canada didn’t in the 1980s).

Mark went on to be the owner of The Mod Club in Toronto, which hosts all sorts of electronic music and live music events - which is where he picked up DJing. I’d frequently bump into him at various events at the Mod Club in the naughties and 2010s.

Plantinum Blonde released a self-produced and released comeback album that was largely all electronic with Mark’s vocals in 2012. Just as they were about to go out on tour across Canada with great fanfare, their original drummer died of a heart attack. They still tour to this day although several members of the band have since passed on.

Anyway, this was #1 in Canada on September 7, 1985. Here’s Plantinum Blonde with ‘Crying Over You’ on Jaded FM!

Were there quite a few of them to begin with, loopy?

I’m not sure they had much success outside of Canada either. I just got in to that song because I’m a huge fan of Crystal Castles (who were also from Toronto) and they did a couple of cover versions of it.

The video for that other song of theirs you posted is quite cool, but I still prefer the song I posted.

          hugopal

Yeah, Crystal Castles are decent. They also did a tune with Robert Smith of The Cure that’s excellent.

I actually prefer the Crystal Castles cover of it over the original! 😆

            Millsy

Had to do it. It’s been a while that I’ve done it in an absolutely non-related thread. 😆

loopdokter They also did a tune with Robert Smith of The Cure that’s excellent.

What do you mean “also”? Their tune with Robert Smith was the second version of their cover of the Platinum Blonde song.

My favourite version of all three is the first Crystal Castles one (without Robert Smith).

That reminds me, do you like Phil Collins?

I fucking loathe Richard Marx. He’s Kenny G bad.

My dad and I used to play this game where he’d pick a radio station of his choosing on long drives and the first to guess the most artists over the course of the drive would ‘win’. I was far better at it than him being a music obsessive. He was more of an average fan of music (mostly prog rock, Queen, The Police, Supertramp, Paul Simon and folk). I’d always annoy the shit out of him that I’d know who Emerson, Lake & Palmer were and the like.

When he didn’t know the artist, in order to wind me up he’d say it was Richard Marx. It really wound me up! He used to call The Cure ‘The Disease’ because he absolutely hated Robert Smith’s voice. That also wound me up a lot! Bless him!

Right. Sorry. I’m not sure why I thought otherwise. 1,000 lashes to me.

                    Correct!

For when you want to go ‘ethnic’ and let your non-existent dreads hang out even though you’re whiter than Betty, but don’t want to step too far outside of the realm of safety. I imagine you vote for people like Nigel Farage.

and what a waste of money on you they were.

though I guess one struggles to fathom what kind of hole you’d have ended up in without it.

Lol, the green eyes on Hugo, absolutely FEWMIN!

Maybe it wasn’t as much of a thing in Ireland and the UK, but in North America there was a certain era of drive time radio personalities where they’d use all sorts of whacky names like Mike ‘The Dog’ Devine (who barked on air) and enthusiastically back announced tunes, ran ridiculous contests, told witty anecdotes and were generally and purposely over the top. Not quite Howard Stern shock jock level, but more people who were absolutely in love with music. Think John Peel combined with Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam. It made listening to radio enjoyable, whereas (at least in North America) it’s now all playlisted by massive corporations and unlistenable.

In a previous life I had a radio show and absolutely loved it. It was a right laugh.

At least in the UK there’s the BBC and specialist shows, DJ mix shows and the like. Most of that has disappeared here - sadly.

loopdokter me neither. All that ’suaving the dorises, I’m off to this and that fancy restaurant on my tod’
                          Cunt!

Thanks for this Mills. Been battling with my inner demons trying to resist making the post you’ve just made 😂
