Maybe it wasn’t as much of a thing in Ireland and the UK, but in North America there was a certain era of drive time radio personalities where they’d use all sorts of whacky names like Mike ‘The Dog’ Devine (who barked on air) and enthusiastically back announced tunes, ran ridiculous contests, told witty anecdotes and were generally and purposely over the top. Not quite Howard Stern shock jock level, but more people who were absolutely in love with music. Think John Peel combined with Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam. It made listening to radio enjoyable, whereas (at least in North America) it’s now all playlisted by massive corporations and unlistenable.
In a previous life I had a radio show and absolutely loved it. It was a right laugh.
At least in the UK there’s the BBC and specialist shows, DJ mix shows and the like. Most of that has disappeared here - sadly.
