I think you have to remember that racism and xenophobia are nailed on with the Tories. Labour’s ethos is against that, so they have to take a different approach. Plus, it is about signalling that they are departing from the old far left socialism Corbyn path that failed to secure Labour’s election. You can’t expect a country that has been gaslit and fed propaganda by the Tories for 13 years to just swing to a party that positions itself at the hard left. In a country with an electorate that doesn’t follow politics and lacks critical thinking skills, you’ve got to take baby steps.
