  • Diggers Joshua Brooks Manchester?

RichM never heard it called that before, you learn something new everyday 😁

Fairly sure Dave calls it Slurrey.

IndustryStandard It was a grim, tiny shithole of a place when I went for Nick Warren this time last year. To the point I didn’t bother going to see JZ when he was there after the Sasha Manchester Cathedral gig in August. It would take something like Diggers on NYE to get me back there, so here we are.

My review of going to see NW at JB last year:

    //——————

Went to see Nick Warren on Saturday. Afraid to say he wasn’t much cop (putting it politely) and the mix that inspired the evening out must have been a total one off or something. He certainly dropped some bangers but the mixing was too quick and the programming was poor (he mashed an absolute banger into a chilled breaks tune at one point early on and it was like ‘wah?’ and he was dropping tunes from a live set he released on MixCloud back in September including ‘novelty’ tunes like a cowgirl and new order crystals remix which didn’t help matters. Seemed more of a novelty party set than a DJ set tbh.

The venue wasn’t much to write home about - small intimate place but the sound system only worked in the main bit and it was a weird crowd - some nice people I got chatting to but some people absolutely off their faces, way past your average - I got a rollocking off a scouser because of the Newcastle takeover ‘buying the league’ who seemed oblivious about where he was at that point in time - a dealer was flogging acid and said I wasn’t hardcore enough when I wasn’t up for it. Fair enough I guess. lol. - it was reasonably busy and TBF, the people who were there were jumping but they didn’t get anywhere near selling out. They didn’t even check my tickets on the way in. You could say it’s close to xmas but I think Digweed / Sasha would have filled the place easily. I guess Warren and the soundgarden stuff just hasn’t got the pull to play bigger venues in the UK.

Nice to see some familiar faces and an evening out is an evening out but I’ll not be bothering with Warren or Joshua Brooks (the venue) again.

      IndustryStandard Joshua Brooks

not gonna lie, I was thinking this was the support act! 😆 Did cross my mind why the venue hadn’t been announced yet…

      • Heno replied to this.

Last time I went was in the 000’s and it was a student nightclub of sorts. Not sure if its had a refurb or not?

IndustryStandard Looks like quite a small intimate venue Joshua Brooks. Anyone been?

Know it well. Not great, originally a bar way back.

The way it’s been built, doesn’t lend itself to being a good venue.

Solid brisk as well so scope for change is minimal

Wally I’ll not be bothering with Warren or Joshua Brooks (the venue) again.

Good to see you sticking to your guns Wal 😂

Mad_Cyril lol - well tbf, I didn’t have ‘Diggers does NYE at JB’ on my bingo card.

I also 100% thought Joshua Brooks was a Dj

Has bruno brooks anything to do with this? Hip new young name to relaunch his career, bruno warming up for sasha with 2 hours of dark and moody prog rollers. Just like the old days.

ScottBailey I was the exact same, taught he was middle of the road prog dj peddling a album on bedrock I’d never listen to

No mate. Phoenix is on the uni campus down Oxford Rd, towards curry mile direction.

JB is closer to central town, near to Canal St. Was a famous gay club across the street, can’t remember it’s name for the life of me (honest!)

There’s a club called ‘G.A.Y’ over the road with massive bright white lettering.

I took a pic, sent it to my mate over whats app message ‘U R <picture>‘

He told me to grow the fuck up.

That’s the place, not what it was called 20 years ago though.

Would have been firebombed every week?
