Thickets on the road thread

Was gonna call it the “Cunts on the road thread” but opted not to in case the mods didn’t approve. This is inspired by Benson’s recent post on driving, which made me realise there is a market for a bunch of middle aged blokes to whinge about the thickets we all have to deal with on the roads.

A few initial points to get the discussion started:

My view is that the general shiteness on the roads with middle-lane hoggers, tail-gaters etc is because in general, people are too selfish and ignorant and because they realise they can get away with it since there is so little police presence on the roads. Plus, most people are way too absorbed in getting somewhere as quickly as possible and just don’t give a toss.

I notice it driving around in my local area that other will readily pull out in front of you, because why not, right? I increasingly see pedestrians who just step out in front of me and give me a look like “what you gonna do about it? Run me over?”.

If you have ever seen Ashley Neal’s YT vids, he is a driving instructor who talks a lot about the number of motorists that like to “tell other road users off” by flashing lights, tailgating if you pull out in front. He also talks about “space closers” who actually make a situation worse by blocking people or speeding up to close a gap. Worth checking out as I think he brings some good perspectives.

On the flip side, there are far too many back-to-fronts driving around who think it’s acceptable to flick their indicator on just as they start turning in, and just as you’ve taken the first step into the road thinking they’re driving on.

Do you mean at junctions? I think there was a recent change in the Highway Code. Junctions and at the exit point of roundabouts, I think, from memory.

Possibly, haven’t read the Highway Code since I passed my test, just have some vague recollection of reading in a paper.

Running people over seems a lot less satisfying if they have right of way.

I drove from Chester to Heathrow recently (still have to pass a nucleic acid test to fly so didn’t want to be on the train near a load of mouthbreathers from Ellesmere Port).

I was driving down in the middle of the day and took the M6 toll so the roads weren’t busy at all most of the way.

Joining the motorway at Chester, off at Hilton Park for a piss, off again at Norton Canes for a coffee and a butty, back on again, that’s three times I joined the motorway, every cunting time people in the slow lane who could have moved over in anticipation of cars joining didn’t, meaning I had to slam the cunting Kia I had hired in between two cars or vans with about 5mm distance at front and back. Cunts.

Witnessed a lady yesterday driving a Merc in the middle lane on the M4 doing 50 while she was being under/ overtaking by everybody. She was completely oblivious to what she was doing. It’s dangerous.

Rather than hold anyone up going into a space or leaving one, I just do lazy cunt’s parking, that is aim for the place where you can just drive forwards through one space and face forwards and outwards in the second space. Job done. Even if I have to walk a bit further to the shop.

I fear I am guilty of the middle lane thing on motorways. The first lane is too slow, the fast lane full of cars doing 80mph plus, so the middle lane just feels right. However, I always pull over and I’m not sitting in it doing 50 or anything. Am I in the wrong?

No, the people that have this obsession with getting back to the left hand lane are the most entertaining on the road. They seem to be obsessed with it, but have no problem driving over the speed limit, veering across the carriageway, cutting in front of people with this self righteous obsession that they’re doing the right thing. They ignore that people should move into the middle lane at entrances and exits to motorways, or that you can overtake more than one vehicle at a time and veering in front of people isn’t returning to the lane when it is safe to do so. What’s even worse is when they think that they should force people driving at the speed limit into a slower lane because of their desire to drive over the speed limit. Anyone that has done any advanced driver training, even police driver training will know that they tell you to drive in the middle lane when there is no traffic on the road and move to the left only when a faster vehicle is coming up behind and overtaking. That doesn’t apply to bellends driving at 100 mph, flashing their lights or tailgating.

I was on the A530 between Nantwich and Crewe last week and got cut up by a Jeep being driven at high speed on the wrong side of the road. The driver was an angry looking chap in a vest sat beside his equally angry looking other half. There were two children in the back who were both crying. All I heard the driver shout was ‘get put of my way you flaming galaa!’ but in an estuaries accent, which I found rather bizarre. He looked really cold.
