I didn’t know this TBH. However, this doesn’t surprise me as Rugby Union has a long history of class prejudice and is still representative of the social divide between the deindustrialised northern working class and the upper-class private schooling of the south.
I would wager that some of the early aristocratic participants of this sport benefitted handsomely from the slave trade.
