OED defines ‘assassination’ as: “The murder of a person (esp. a prominent public figure) in a planned attack, typically with a political or ideological motive, sometimes carried out by a hired or professional killer; a murderous attack of this kind.”
He was still a reasonably famous political figure who one way or another was killed in a planned attack because of his views, influence and prominence. He had 10mil instagram followers and 5mil twitter followers, and had founded an organisation with $85 mil of annual revenue. He was even spoofed on South Park! It is clearly enough to classify as an assassination.
Maybe you do have a small bone, but that seems an odd place to pick it.
