150,000 puts someone firmly in the top decile. You could argue that you’re ‘rich’ only if you’ve accumulated assets, but even so…

Well, it depends if you’ve mortgaged yourself to the hilt I suppose, and are paying boarding school fees for 3 kids.

But I reckon anybody who earns 150,000 a year should be in a position where they can fuck a job off and not have to work for the next two years if they don’t want to.

I earn a lot less than that (but on the other side, have no dependants), but could comfortably fuck work off for a couple of years if I wanted.

It depends on outgoings. People earning 4-5x what I do were hardest hit by the pandemic as the private work which gave them that income dried up and the school fees, car payments and mortgage carried on.

Rich = How much is in your savings, definitely not how much you’re earning.

rhouses not really, it you earn a lot of money you are rich. If you choose to spend it all on fancy cars, kids private education, massive mortgage, then you are still rich, but probably cash poor.

RichM The only thing I would constitute as “rich” in that list would be kid private education. Fancy cars depreciate in value the moment you drive it out of the lot, and a massive mortgage in these times seems to be more of a wealth liability than anything else.

the very obvious and uncontentious truth here is that wealth is a function of net worth and not a function of income, which is why the BBC’s article was both sloppy and partisan.

Wealth and being rich is relative, but I think if you’re generalising about large sections of the population, you should take them into account.

I’ve got a great salary package, I wouldn’t consider myself rich, but my dad would probably knock me out if I told him what I earn. £150k to anyone on near-normal salaries is a huge amount of money
