alistair Not sure its overrated. It sold millions but I don’t know any REM fan who places it among their best.

Fair point.

In the 90s, I seem to remember everyone had it in their Ikea Benno CD racks, from your alternative university slags right up to your Def Leppard-loving uncle.

bosstrabs yup, I’d consider Automatic for the People to be far superior. Famously got a then record $80m multi album deal from Warner off the back of it and sales of subsequently went through the floor.

Automatic for the People was an excellent album, pretty much start to finish, but I never listen to it, again because of the singles - the ubiquity of Everybody Hurts and the tweeness of Nightswimming.

bosstrabs Kind of agree with that. Still love Drive and Man on the moon

As a Springsteen fan I’ve got to say that Born To Run is massively overrated! Only track I play off it is Tenth Avenue Freeze Out. He’s done so much better!

Happy confirm that the royalties received from all of Eternal’s album, meant he was able to retire at 49.

        Cheers!

I’m a huge Metallica-fan and I am quite happy to never listen to the Black Album again. Last time was when they released the remaster in 2021. It’s far too polished.

This is a very good website for seeing which albums and songs are actually “rated” by music critics, and how highly, which many of you here could find interesting.

It uses a formula to aggregate the rankings of basically all the ‘best of’ lists from major music magazines and websites, eg from Rolling Stone’s ‘best albums of all time’, to Pitchfork’s ‘best songs of the 90s’ etc etc - and compiles them in to two comparable lists for most acclaimed songs of all time, and most acclaimed albums of all time.

bosstrabs New Adventures in Hi-fi and Document are REM’s best.

alistair Not sure its overrated. It sold millions but I don’t know any REM fan who places it among their best. Murmur however…

I don’t listen to REM at all - but based on music critics ‘Automatic for the People’ is their most acclaimed album, followed by ‘Murmur’.

Homegrove I’m a huge Metallica-fan and I am quite happy to never listen to the Black Album again

Someone dial 999! He’s not breathing!

Don’t you leave us Hannu! Wake up, you hear me. Wake up!!!
