Mad_Cyril How does this tally with Elon’s ‘green credentials’??
It doesn’t.
I read that NASA scrapped the idea of their version of Starlink years ago as they worked out the fuel needed to get it up there and maintain it was fuckin daft and the benefits didn’t outweigh the costs. Plus they were shooting themselves and other astronomers in the foot as it light pollutes like a bastard.
Even better, we will soon have nuclear material shot into space as it’s realistically the only way to get to Mars. If you use conventional liquid combustion fuels for that journey (Earth orbit to Mars orbit) the weight of said fuel will be more than everything else we’ve ever put into space as a planet combined. Then imagine how many launches that will take just to get that fuel into Earth orbit.
FYI, I’m okay with the nuclear gear going on a rocket, but I doubt other will be. Dunno if Elon has been chatting about this yet or keeping his big nuclear space rocket plan to himself.
