hugopal you have a good point. I’m not sure what they are aiming at now. I’m guessing it’s not the same as what their market was fie for the first 10 odd years.
The majority of us represent those early period and not the last 10 years of their output. But surely that make sense? They aren’t there to please one generation but all generations.
Personally I think they should relabel the brand to focus on the newer crowd and should closed the GU label a while ago to capture the time period. And create a new brand for this generations crowd to own and love.

Would people really care about a new compilation brand though? With mixes so readily available online it’s surely already an uphill battle to get people to pay money for a mix compilation. Plus it’s also probably more difficult now to get a DJ to put extra effort in to such a compilation when they also have so many other ways to showcase themselves than just CDs and an occasional ‘Essential Mix’.
At least GU still has a bit of historical cache and brand recognition that might encourage potential customers to pay a bit more attention, and also hopefully get the DJs to devote a bit of energy in to making it special (though the Lens one felt like a below-par promo teaser from her).
hugopal I get where you are coming from. I think I was trying to look at it from the angle of being 21 in the scene now. Would I care about all the old GUs? Prob not as that wasn’t my scene, and I want something which represent the here and now
My mates in our youth who were into band music didn’t want to listen to their dad’s music, but wanted their own scene. You look back now and question why my mates didn’t just listen to the stones and Beatles rather than oasis and blur. But that’s life, the youth want their scene not hang onto an old scene, no matter how good it may have been

Sure, but that’s why they’ve been bringing in DJs who have recent prominence like Amelie Lens and Joseph Capriati.
People bought each year’s ’Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilation, or ‘Ministry of Sound: Annual’ compilations in their droves each year even though they’d been going on for ages - although the concept for the CDs were the same each time, the music was new. If GU were just getting Nick Warren back to do 90s prog mixes you might have more of a point.
‘DJ Kicks’ is also still going with newer DJs like Avalon Emerson, Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon, DJ Boring etc.
What sort of difference in concept would you shift GU to anyway? I don’t think it’s as if the notion of a “Global Underground” shouldn’t still have appeal. What kind of other angle would greater encourage a young contemporary audience to buy mix CDs?!

I’ve enjoyed our time in the weeds, it’s not as bad as people make out!
As highlighted in a previous post, Spotify has a remarkable paucity of full length dj mixes.
The Watergate series is good.
Some of the Balance mixes are on there.
Although, given the shite that’s about, it not being on Spotify could be a massive bonus!

I don’t know, but considering that on youtube there are lots of complete live recorded mixes from sort of club nights eg Boiler Room sets and recordings from festivals and special events like Arte Concert, Dekmantel etc., the concept of a mix coming from a club night also isn’t as unique any more.
Releasing physical CDs and related items is actually one of the very few things that still distinguishes GU from other mostly digital-only content out there.
