We go again Rich!

In deep weeds, abandoned…

RichM Would I care about all the old GUs? Prob not as that wasn’t my scene, and I want something which represent the here and now
My mates in our youth who were into band music didn’t want to listen to their dad’s music, but wanted their own scene. You look back now and question why my mates didn’t just listen to the stones and Beatles rather than oasis and blur.
Sure, but that’s why they’ve been bringing in DJs who have recent prominence like Amelie Lens and Joseph Capriati.
People bought each year’s ’Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilation, or ‘Ministry of Sound: Annual’ compilations in their droves each year even though they’d been going on for ages - although the concept for the CDs were the same each time, the music was new. If GU were just getting Nick Warren back to do 90s prog mixes you might have more of a point.
‘DJ Kicks’ is also still going with newer DJs like Avalon Emerson, Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon, DJ Boring etc.
What sort of difference in concept would you shift GU to anyway? I don’t think it’s as if the notion of a “Global Underground” shouldn’t still have appeal. What kind of other angle would greater encourage a young contemporary audience to buy mix CDs?!
hugopal maybe that’s the problem, they are trying to stick to the same old formula that’s now redundant aka mix cds, regardless of the DJs they bring in.
TBH I don’t know what they should do instead, am guessing it should be online, digital stuff. But how do they distinguish something different to all the other online mixes, no idea. Do they still do the concept of the mix coming from a club night? That at least was something slightly unique.
I’ve enjoyed our time in the weeds, it’s not as bad as people make out!
As highlighted in a previous post, Spotify has a remarkable paucity of full length dj mixes.
The Watergate series is good.
Some of the Balance mixes are on there.
Although, given the shite that’s about, it not being on Spotify could be a massive bonus!
Mad_Cyril Fuck Spotify off Dave. MySpace for mixed comps.
Buy all uncle johns CDs and your life will be remarkably less miserable (hoodies, mugs, mouse-mats and pens will also help)
I do do Soundcloud as well.
I think the last Bedrock CD I bought was Chris Fortier (excellent it was too, but a long time ago).

I don’t know, but considering that on youtube there are lots of complete live recorded mixes from sort of club nights eg Boiler Room sets and recordings from festivals and special events like Arte Concert, Dekmantel etc., the concept of a mix coming from a club night also isn’t as unique any more.
Releasing physical CDs and related items is actually one of the very few things that still distinguishes GU from other mostly digital-only content out there.
The CD MixComp weeds?

at risk of going further into the weeds with you, you realise that most of the GU’s after 007 are Pro Tool’d the fuck out of and not recorded live from the club, right?
Even the Oakenfold ones weren’t recorded at the club, this was part of the recording from the New York GU gig

The Oslo one was also done afterwards as he probably train-wrecked each mix.
Dry-Tinder Mix? Oslo sounds like a preview mix like the ones Digweed puts out before one of his mix CD releases.
He re-recorded it after the gig and didn’t even tell GU until after the release. I suppose the other issue is copyright issues if the mix has already been done and people start demanding mega money. The ones pre-Sydney do feel more like mixtapes, which I quite like, especially the Nick Warren one.
Well, a lot of people here were asking for another MMII. What’s wrong with a proper, well thought out mix by the likes of Sasha and Digweed? Apart from sales.
