Cankles-McJeggings I just don’t think it’s as simple as laying the blame squarely at the Glazers’ feet, OR at the feet of the footballing staff.
I do think it’s fair to say that the owners have prioritised commercial performance ahead of football success. Ideally, one follows the other, but I just don’t get the sense the Glazers give a flying fuck about the football club itself, as long as it remains a cash cow for them.
Yes - there has been a lot of money available for transfers. Struggling to remember the last ‘great signing’ I can remember Utd making. Maybe the signing of Ibrahimovic back in 2016 on a free. The number of hideously poor signings in recent years? Immeasurable. We took a £100m bath on Pogba, £30m on Alexis Sanchez just to keep him out of City’s hands, £53 for Fred, £80m for Maguire, £50m for Wan-Bissaka. I don’t think Utd have added value to player (sold for more than bought) in the past 10 years or thereabouts. Might be wrong, but certainly feels that way…
Good managers have come and gone at Utd in the past 10 years. Strong characters like Van Gaal and Mourinho couldn’t get the club to work. You’ve got to ask whether they were really in control of the club’s spending policy. I don’t think the Glazers were sitting in the back office picking which players to buy. I do think they installed Ed Woodward as CEO, who was a fucking disaster for the club, and who oversaw some of the most pitiful transfer windows in the club’s history.
Fundamentally, the club is rotten, and the Glazers have to take their share of responsibility for that. A change of ownership doesn’t magically change the outcome for the club, but IMO it’s a necessary first step if Utd ever want to be a top performing club again.
