Smallman1 Well, it does actually look very good, I have to admit. And it’s long established. They say a basic essential of a Chinese restaurant is that they should be able to execute a great Yangzhou Fried Rice (called ‘Yeung-Chow Fried Rice’ here), in the same way that a good Western chef should be able to execute an excellent risotto, so I would definitely order that to see what it’s chatting.
I have to admit I have never heard of ‘Shanghai Chilli Chicken’ and I spend a lot of time in Shanghai. It’s probably the Chinese city I am second most familiar with. The Shanghainese just do not eat spicy food. Sweet sauces and seafood are their thing, really.
Searching Google for ‘Shanghai Chilli Chicken’ reveals loads of Indian places, so I imagine it is something Chinese migrants took to India, changed the recipe to suit local tastes (adding chilli) and then christened it ‘Shanghai Chilli Chicken’ to make it sound good. Maybe Rhouses can confirm. Not because he’s Indian, just because he’s a fat cunt.
This story itself would be quite interesting, though. A Chinese restaurant in London doing an Indian-Chinese dish is sort of meta, in the same way that the occasional hipster Chinese restaurant in Beijing or Shanghai doing American-Chinese favourites is.
