Cankles McJeggings’ Meats & Beats
Stepping into Cankles McJeggings’ Meats & Beats is like walking into a time capsule where Northern England’s rave scene meets culinary excellence. Located on a quiet corner of Crewe high street, this restaurant promises two things: heavily tenderised meat and an ambiance drenched in nostalgia for DJ Sasha’s 90s glory days. The walls are a shrine to Sasha. Faded, high-energy photos of him spinning records in Stoke, Mansfield, and the annexe at Cream hang proudly. Each table features laminated flyers from legendary club nights at venues like Shelley’s. There’s even a grainy, looping VHS tape of Sasha’s 1999 Gatecrasher set playing in the corner. The vibe is gritty yet oddly charming, like a warehouse rave that never ended. If you came looking for variety, you;ll be disappointed. The entire menu consists of different cuts of meat—beef, pork, chicken, and lamb—each hammered into submission with what I can only assume is a sledgehammer. No marinades, no seasoning, no sides. Just meat and a hammer. I opted for the ‘Tenderised Trio’: a slab of beef, a pork chop, and a chicken breast. Each piece arrived on a wooden board, flattened to near transparency. The only condiment offered was a small dish of salt, served with a hug from Cankles himself. The hammering is not just culinary process; it’s performance. Patrons are invited to watch as their chosen cut of meat is pounded mercilessly in the open kitchen, accompanied by the throbbing basslines of Dulux Connection’s ’Let’s Beuk’ and Morel’s ‘True (The Faggot is You)’. It’s oddly therapeutic.
3.5 out of 5 hammers.

Amazing birthday dinner here last night. Partridge main, and mushroom custard dessert were incredible…
