What are your go-to Chinese dishes, BT? I didn’t like “Chinese” food until I spent more time in Oakland’s Chinatown. Realized what I don’t like are the westernized dishes like General Tso’s chicken and beef/broccoli - they’re too sweet for me. There’s a spot that focuses on Shandong style and it’s tremendous. Excellent dumplings and hand-pulled noodles. I’m down to try other regional dishes but not really sure where to start. And those menus can be intimidating when I don’t know what I’m looking at. So ideas appreciated.

jonattonyeah Shandong cuisine is excellent and heavily influences Beijing cuisine, being a neighbouring province.

I have favourite dishes from all over China. Too numerous to mention.

I would recommend trying a Hunanese restaurant at some point if you have not already. But, really, all eight of the famous styles (Cantonese, Hunanese, Sichuan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui) have dishes to commend them.

I don’t know what they’re called but the large baked potato that gets the inside taken out, turned into mash, mixed with cheese, back inside the jacket and then back in the oven. Wowsers, top notch. The crispy jacket combo with the mash, next level.

My dad used to make something similar when we were kids although it was mixed with corned beef & onion plus cheese. it was delicious.
