I get that and I understand he’s really not much more than a basketball player at heart. But if you’re going to do an event, and show up, just say a few words. If you don’t want to, and simply want to do good things for the community, don’t show - slap your name on it and call it a day. It was really odd and even his mother seemed weirded out.
