I watched a couple of biographical films over the weekend.

JFK (1991) - I seem to recall that this was panned at the time (might be wrong on that), perhaps due to its long runtime (3hrs 10 mins) - but it was actually a very solid retelling of the JFK assassination. Lots of big and future stars were in this as well - although the hairpieces on Tommy Lee Jones and Joe Pesci have got to be the worst I have ever seen on the big screen.

I’m Still Here (2024) - I saw this recommended in this thread and I am glad I watched it. A very interesting account of the military dictatorship in the late 60s/early 70s within Brazil, which I must confess I was unaware of previously. Some great acting performances, especially from the main female character. I would defintely recommend

Blood Simple (1984). Coen-brothers’ first film, and what a great debut. This was my first time watching this, and I loved it. There was so much here they did similarly in No Country, but not in between those two movies. Not having seen this before I thought No Country was an outlier film for them, but turns out it was a return of sorts.

Watched the Tony De Vit film yesterday . Was an odd watch . Sad to hear of his health issues and collapsing during his last gig . That scene around ‘98 and the those Gods Kitchen, Sundisential events looked absolutely bonkers .

Still a bit unsure how his relationship with a then 15yr old Fergie and another lad who was 16 at the time looks in the cold light of day / 30 yrs on .

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

I’m sort of happy I didn’t watch this before tonight, I like or even love what most of what Del Toro’s done since, but I’m pretty sure I would have been disappointed by all of them had I seen this 19 years ago. A masterpiece.

The Third Man (1949)

I spent most of the movie doing the Leo fingerpointing meme from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood of shots I’ve seen in movies made since this was released. But it was a really good movie too. Just an awful soundtrack though, jesus.

Catch Me If You Can (2002). More unwatched Spielberg for me. Had trouble getting into it for the first 20 minutes, but after that this was a really entertaining movie. Some really cool shots too, fucking Spielberg man. Tom Hanks should not have done that attempt at a Boston-accent though, it wouldn’t fly on a parody. Horrible. Worse crime towards accents than Don Cheadle’s cockney in the Ocean’s movies.

Homegrove Damn I was closer than ever to hitting play on this yesterday as well, mostly because the missus was gracing me with her presence and wanted to watch a movie together. Felt like an easy option. Ended up watching the new Jessica Biel murder mystery tv show, called sisters or something. Hated myself for it.

strummer Along_the_Wire I’ve just watched Internal Affairs. It’s a dated badly, cheesy, a bit shit and not remotely connected to The Departed other than a good cop and a bad cop. Which covers a lot of ground in a lot of films.
