Got home early from work (POETS day), wife was organizing at a horse jumping competition today so home alone. Barbequed myself the dinner on our gass grill, then had a double bill of Shane Black-movies in our home theatre with a six pack of Budvar-lager.

The Nice Guys (2016). British boutique Blu ray-label Second Sight released this on 4K last month. Bought it because I love the movie. Ryan Gosling has got great comedic chops, and he’s never been better at using them than in this.

Lethal Weapon (1987). Also has a new 4K transfer out now. This however I got from AppleTV. One of those movies I watched a LOT on VHS as a kid. Has aged quite gracefully actually. Gibson’s aussie-accent keeps slipping in a lot, and the last fight on the lawn goes on way too long, but this is still a lot of fun. Danny Glover was 40 playing 50 when this was filmed.

Men (2022). Alex Garland mixes misoguny with the Green Man-legend. Really fucked up, and not very good. He’s usually more subtle, this really hammers his points in. I’ll give it points for being his creepiest movie, and he did Annihilation prior to this.

Rewatched A History of Violence the other night. Was as good as I remember it. Am a big fan of Vigo Mortensen.

Raising Arizona (1987). It is wonderful to have a movie you’ve heard about almost all your life, that everybody seems to love, live up to it’s reputation.

I just can’t get my head around the fact that the Coens followed Blood Simple with THIS?!

Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades.
Fantastic old Japanese film from 1972 based on Manga series about a samurai and his son roaming the lands as an assassin looking for revenge but helping people along the way. Bit like a bloodier Littlest Hobo.
3rd in the series and a shame this is the only one that popped up on Plex. Been a long time since I saw the others on some shitty old dvds with a terrible picture….this is the restored version.

Widow on first date can’t stop texting…

This is truly awful, to the extent that I’ve lost faith in Rotten Tomatoes. Was going to take a leap of faith and watch Sinners which is scoring a 96/96 but I’m re-evaluating the idea after seeing this. Meghan Fahy goes on a date after her psychotic nut job of a husband tops himself and gets blackmailed while at some shit generic ‘Fine Dining’ restaurant. The only action scene is shown in the trailer but left me in a state of quandary as to the level of my physics as I didn’t realise a high rise building was sufficiently high that the air pressure outside dropped sufficiently that a vacuum effect is created. Avoid at all costs.

Species (1995). Rewatchables did an episode on this, it’s on Prime and I did not see it when it was released. And there’s a reason nobody’s talked about it since then, it’s fucking awful. I know Bill Simmons wanted to celebrate Michael Madsen, and they’ve already done Reservoir Dogs, but man he was in a lot of other movies too. Natasha Henstridge besides having amazing looks and a body is also somehow easily the best actor in this, with the guys like Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker being awful in it.

Amps haha not for you brother. More for wally and the likes. Stick with Christopher Reeves and save me the abuse. It’s my first superman movie since and i loved it. Thought i could do henry cavill in man of steel yesterday, had to turn it off 20 mins in.

wrongun I saw the trailer about 6 six times in cinema in front of various films this year, and the trailer is awful. Does not give a good indication about the actual movie. Might not mean the movie is for you, it is very much a James Gunn-joint in good and bad.
