Dark City (1998)
Arrow Video 4K Blu ray.
Watched the director’s cut for the first time, and boy did New Line shit the bed with the changes they demanded. Before seeing this version I did not realize how badly the theatrical cut ruins all the mystery in this movie.
Aggressively 90s in every way, good and bad. I had a really good time revisiting this, it took me back to the time when we used to take a chance in the video store with a movie we’d never even heard of that seemed cool. And even if it wasn’t we’d watch it all the way through because we’d paid to rent it. In the streaming era I have a feeling people will quite quickly bail on a movie they chanced upon in Netflix if it seems not to their liking.
This was still cool, but not as cool than when I must have first seen it as a VHS rental in 1999 probably. Still do not regret buying the limited edition-version, even if it was a bit costly.
