Didn’t realise this was gonna lean into the post Brat Pack / New England collegiate vibe quite so much… The 80s Universal intro and the attempts to make the digital shooting look like film (failed because shooting in 4k or more just makes everything too crisp; just shoot film on old cameras) are a bit on the nose, but otherwise it was enjoyable enough. I’m not sure it hit all the high notes of some of the films it was trying to emulate though. Giamatti is as good as ever.

I quite enjoyed this albeit giving it some grace at various times.

Small Things Like These (2024)

Cillian Murphy plays a taciturn coal merchant in Ireland who chucks his bags coal around all day then comes home and scrubs his hands and eats his dinner with his wife and daughters. That’s pretty much it, other than stuff that would be a spoiler.

This is a beautifully observed, quiet little gem of film.

Nosferatu (2024). I loved it. However a couple in a row before us left 30 minutes into the film, so clearly like all Eggers-films it’s not for everyone. But it was the first Eggers my wife liked. The pacing was a bit uneven (some parts felt rushed, some went on a bit), but the already announced extended cut on the home release should fix that.

Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok was pretty fucking far from a sexy vampire. It felt like you could smell him, which was awesome. Lily-Rose Depp was also very good.

Heretic. Started off well then got a bit silly but still enjoyable overall

The Beast in the Jungle. French film about a couple who meet up at a nightclub most weeks over a period of 25yrs - 1979 not 2004 waiting for an undisclosed mysterious event to happen. Odd, hypnotic, pretentious, annoying, beautiful, French. Kept me watching. Good soundtrack going from disco to techno.

Nosferatu - Decent but it’s a very straight faced telling of the story. Looks amazing and is Egger’s most accessible, co-herent film but I was hoping for some bonkers ‘The Lighthouse’ style creativity which isn’t there. 7.5 plague rats / 10

We watched two films tonight. The new Wallace & Gromit on Netflix was great, but I doubt I’ll return to it even if I’ve watched Wrong Trousers (for which this is a sequel) and the Were Rabbit loads of times. Laughed a lot though.

Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). A first watch for both myself and the wife. I understand this is a beloved dad-film, and I can understand why. Masterfully edited, the 2,5 hour runtime didn’t bother us at all, the movie flows so nicely. A massive supporting cast of UK “that guy” actors. I’ll have to look most of them up from IMDB to know where I’ve seen them.

Homegrove The latter deserves to be seen at the Cinema.

Dan having a surround sound at home was nice, great sound design. I cranked up the volume when it became apparent in the first battle.
