Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead
Two brothers (Philip Seymour Hoffman & Ethan Hawke) decide to rob their parents jewelry store which goes wrong. The story jumps all over the place but is still rather good with few a twist and turns. It also stars the gorgeous Marisa Tomei. 7.5/10

I watched The Wicker Man today. This is not a horror movie, it’s a folk musical. 😃

It’s the movie’s 30th anniversary tomorrow, so we watched the new 4K remaster of The Crow tonight. I was a big fan of all things goth in the 90s (still am actually) so naturally I was obsessed with this movie. It’s got the 90s aesthetics on stereoids, and one of the best soundtracks of all time. The movie hasn’t aged very gracefully, but I liked that it’s so 1994 on this rewatch. The 4K-version also looks fantastic, well worth an iTunes-rental if you too were a fan and won’t mind a bit of a nostalgia here and there. I bought it from there for 4,99 €, rental is 3,99 €. The 4K Blu Ray was a bit steeply priced for this movie at about 30 €. 😃

whatever yeah. There’s apparently some computer trickery done to save the movie (he died midshoot (so to speak)), but I didn’t spot any. I did spot some body double stuff where he was facing away from camera without it making sense in the scene.

Yeah thought so. Gonna try and track that one down. Don’t think I ever watched it before.

whatever oof if you’re not watching it with nostalgia-tinted glasses it might be a bit rough watch.

That Dune coffee table book with Josh Brolin and the cinematographer looks quite tasty. I’d probably invest in that before the blurays, @Homegrove.

Whenever i’m on the Isle of Wight I think of the Wicker Man.

            Similar vibes.

rhouses I’d rather watch the movie at best quality possible than pictures of it.

Bernard Hill’s death gave me the perfect excuse to watch the LOTR-trilogy again. I did it over a week, on six days because each movie is split in two on the 4K Blu Ray-set (one movie, two different discs), and with the extended cuts even half a movie is about two hours long. 😃

Love Lies Bleeding. 2nd film from the director of Saint Maud. Very different to that as it’s an American noirish thriller with women’s body building as it’s backdrop. Nice visuals and soundtrack and Ed Harris is great. Kristen Stewarts constantly on the verge of a breakdown performance is pretty annoying though. Worth a watch

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).

Watched the controversial new 4K Blu Ray release. Short review of that: It’s the best the movie has ever looked for home release, but there are problems.

Longer version: there is basically no film grain to be seen, all’s been scrubbed off. And the fact that it’s on a 66 GB disc instead of a 100 shows in compression, there is little difference in the 4K and 1080 Blu Ray in the box at a quick glance on a 50″ TV. Yet it looks magnificent still. I would heartily recommend this over the 2011 Blu Ray. It is impossible to ruin this movie. It’s the best western ever.

Scratch the fuck out of your spectacles. Grainy problem solved.

              Challengers (2024): 5.5/10

Well this was an odd movie. Got great critical reviews. Story is of a love triangle on a tennis circuit background between Prince Charles, some dead behind the eyes aryan-looking guy and Zendaya. Story skips around in time and basically follows their relationships and I’m not really sure whether there’s a message beyond ‘a tennis match itself is a relationship between 2 people for its duration’. It’s oddly filmed and the Trent Reznor soundtrack is really grating as it overlays quite loud techno over all the key dialogue in I presume an attempt to create tension. As it is, I struggled to hear any of the important bits. I turned down the 5 pm option of the subtitled showing at the electric but in retrospect should’ve gone for that.

The synopsis sounded sketchy when I read it, didn’t get as far as the trailer!

Fair play to Alex for taking one for the team!

Wasily Don’t fancy the film much (the tennis scenes look cringe), but the soundtrack’s excellent

Dan worst Tarantino-movie. Yeah, I rate Death Proof over it. It just doesn’t earn it’s length. It’s Reservoid Dogs or The Thing as a western in a cabin, and twice as long.
