Had a very schizo movie-day. First:
Frances Ha (2012).
Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwick’s first collaboration. Greta Gerwick’s Frances is 20 something dancer in New York who’s life is a mess. Very funny, early Adam Driver-movie too. Must not get annoyed by hipsters to enjoy this one. I liked it a lot.

Predator 2 (1990).
I’d only seen this one once before, and that was sometime in 1993 or so, so it was about time I revisited it.
I mean it’s not good (terrible dialogue even by 80s/90s action-standards, and everyone’s dialed up to eleven), but it’s not terrible either. Gary Busey is his old delightful self (his line reading of “lions, tigers and bears, oh my” cracked me up), and this made me miss Bill Baxton again. Danny Glover doesn’t seem to be able to get over the fact that he’s playing another LA cop, while this time as the lead.

Homegrove I’ve watched it twice through, I genuinely love this movie. 3 hours is a bit of a commitment though.

Holy shit I loved this. This and Bugonia make me think I’ve become a nihilist, because they both worked for me so well with their utterly bleak endings. We’re fucked the movie.

Predator: Badlands. Awful. I enjoyed ‘Prey’ but this was absolute garbage of the highest order. 2/10

Apparently it did well with the box office/viewing figures though, and could revitalise the franchise — meaning there could be more bollocks like this.

Duplicity (2009).
I did not expect Tony Gilroy to have this sort of light entertainment in him. It’s obviously not as good as a Michael Clayton or the like, but it was a very fun two hours with some very charming work from Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. Perfect Sunday-evening flick.

Mercy (2026)

Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson in a film that has echoes of Minority Report. Fairly predictable but enjoyable. 7/10.

Trainspotting turns 30 today. 4K UHD version is on Apple with Dolby Vision if anyone’s not watched it in awhile. Get a real good look at that toilet.

Martin Clunes clearly had a blast filming this. That’s about it for positive things about it.

Excalibur (1981).
Arrow Video 4K Blu ray.
First watch, and I loved it. Amazing armour, sets, battles, Helen Mirren as a witch and REALLY hammy acting. How could you not love all that?

Dogma (1999).
Kevin Smith’s magnum opus is finally free of Harvey Weinstein’s hold. I naturally bought the 4K Blu ray right away after it’s release in the UK this February, despite not having watched it since it’s release on DVD in the early 2000s.
Turns out I still really like it, and it still is the best thing Kevin Smith’s ever done, or likely will. I could write so many things about it, but I’ll just do one opinion: Alanis Morissette as God is the best stunt casting in the history of cinema.

Smashed out three movies on the way to London from Orlando. One Battle after another was good but couldn’t help feeling it was overhyped. The farcical, desert car chase/shoot out at the end was a highlight and Sean Penn as Colonel lockjaw was great. Solid 7/10. Struggled with Bugonia, was odd and reminded me of Moviedrome. Still Emma Stone flipping the switch on the two weirdos was memorable 6/10. Smashing Machine was quality though marked by a career best performance by Dwayne Johnson, struggling with his first loss and mental health issues Pretty gut wrenching to watch and enjoyed the scenes in Japan 8/10
