These now seem increasingly common amongst celebrities (well, rappers), and incredibly I have even seen a couple on young, quite fashionable looking (i.e. not criminal-looking) blokes in Chester this past year or so*

*incredible because 1) it’s a provincial city, hardly Manchester or London and 2) because barely any fucker is around the streets most of the time in 2020.

Thoughts on these? Without sounding like an old man, surely the height of absolutely reckless stupidity, beyond ‘rebellious’.

Tats ain’t my cup of tea, but I can appreciate why people do it.

Face tats are risky, you can’t conceal them at all even if you wanted to. Not sure how it’s going to look when you grow old, probably a bit sad.

Most of the gentlemen walking around belfast with face tattoos have killed at least 4 people of the opposite religion. The stuff of absolute mental units.

-si- That’s what I always thought.

For the young ’uns, about 23 with some mad haircut, job prospects completely gone.

It’s not one of the better life choices in my opinion. Fine if you are tattoo artist or a gangland enforcer called evil eric or dangerous dennis but not so good when you are trying to get a job as a paralegal and your name is norman.

Got my avatar tattoo’d on my neck.

Can’t see it with a shirt on tbf.

Depends what line of work you’re in really.

OK, so where is it acceptable? I don’t know of anyone over the age of 30 who would accept someone with a face tattoo working for them.

It surely limits the person to working in pubs, debt collection, Deliveroo jobs, maybe a real niche marketing agency/start-up with an under-30 entrepreneur boss but I imagine even they wouldn’t want to put someone with a face tattoo in front of any slightly conservative clients so…

Couldn’t get away with it when you’re transforming businesses.

You’re pretty limited on neck tat options too Ed. The Burj Khalifa or Bayeux Tapestry notwithstanding.

bosstrabs a guess off the top of my head (some already mentioned itt):

            tattoo artist
            hairdresser
            chef
some pub/bar work (depending on the place)
            artist (music or otherwise)
some music industry jobs - a&r, marketing, lighting/rigging etc.
            bouncer/security
some fashion industry jobs - designer, buyer etc.
            mechanic?
            some marketing/creative agencies
            pimp
            athlete
            sports coach
            self-employed day trader
            professional gambler
            freelance journalist
            author
            freelance coder/software engineer
            furniture maker/restorer
            comedian
            magician
            builder/bricklayer
            youth hostel worker
            drug dealer
            radio presenter/sports commentator
            courier/deliveryman

I love my tattoos, and I will get more, but I never understood tattoos on the face. Maybe because I’ve literally got hundreds of them naturally (freckles)

i’ve got more work than most people and i’m actively considering ideas for one of my hands, but face tattoos definitely still have a massive stigma around them. they’re called job stoppers for a reason. no reason for people to be judged for it, but we’re not that evolved.

I worked with an excellent decorator many years ago who had face & neck tattoos. He was a decent guy but he was first out the door when the company started doing high end domestic work. That was 20 years ago.

and that’s why all my current work at the moment is able to be covered and i waited until my business was established before i even started. i’ve had no obvious issues, but i’m also sure it’s quietly cost me a little business over the years. people don’t say anything or want to be confrontational and i’m also sure not all are comfortable with visible tattoos. i honestly don’t care, but that’s the reality.

303abuser Quite interested that you have a face tattoo and your experience.

“No reason for people to be judge for it” - well, only if you think there are literally no objective standards for how one should dress/look. Fine in a club, I judge no one in that setting. Bloke on a leash with a ball-gag in his mouth? Fine. But I wouldn’t want him wearing S&M attire when he tried to sell me Insurance.

bosstrabs sorry, i’m only half awake, didn’t mean to imply i have a face tattoo. just arms, chest, and fill work between.

to your point though, i think there’s a massive difference between fetish wear and tattoos, but maybe that’s just because i’m not in that world so i see it differently. obviously there will always be social norms, but does art on someone’s skin affect their work? obviously not, but there’s the question of content too. all of my work is fairly palatable and that’s very different from someone with offensive material or heavy black work, as an example.

i think in most western cultures now, there are more people with tattoos than not, so the stigma is fading; not just for convicts and outcasts anymore. i think the message should be the same as with everything else, let’s foster acceptance and tolerance.
