LT42 My point, I think, is don’t believe that governments wouldn’t love to accrue that much power and control over people’s lives if they could.
In practical terms, they now can. What’s stopping them is existing laws, institutions that check government power, and people’s vigilance.
In that sense, I find common cause with the ‘libertarians’ and ‘conspiracy theorists’, and don’t consider them quite as loony as some think.
